So To All The Smart Posters Who Knew We Would Never Draft a QB Early...

I think given similar talent levels or players, the Panther organisation would stay away from a QB. Clausen falling to us made premise 1 irrelevant. He was ranked much higher than all the other guys left so taking him didn't surprise me that much even if you take into account our history.

Not sure if you were here at the time, but there were several posters here who claimed that Fox/Hurney would NEVER draft a QB early, suggesting that it was purely because they hate the position, not that it had anything to do with the player not being the best on their board. They moaned this battlecry when we passed up "studs" like Brady Quinn in the first round.

The thing that always scared Fox about a QB is the bust factor. A first round bust at most positions will set you back for a few years. A first round bust at QB can set your team back for even longer.

One thing you have to remember is that the highest pick we've had under Fox was his first season. Yearly records since then have always been too good to put us drafting in the top ten. The kind of "can't miss" prospects that usually get taken in the first tend to go within the first ten, though obviously there are exceptions.

Having a guy that's as hyped a prospect as Claussen falling to 48 sounds like an episode of a badly written sitcom.

I wouldn't discount the Weis factor either. No it didn't help Brady Quinn, but we were a different team then.
