NFL Draft Report Cards (Fox Sports)

This from Fox Sports website:

Carolina Panthers

On paper, if this is GM Marty Hurney’s final draft with the Panthers, it has a chance to be his best. Hurney didn’t have a first-round pick and he tried to trade up with the Rams in order to select Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen (pictured), but got him anyway with the 48th overall pick in the second round. Clausen should give Matt Moore a run for his money sometime this season as the starter. Grade: A+

i'm not sure i buy the A+

we did select 3 QB's with the goal of converting one to WR (with no real evidence he cold run a route tree)

then, after losing 3 starting DL's, we draft 1.

we drafted a player with a significant injury history.

clausen was an A+ pick, but i can't imagine that single move can give us an A+ overall.

B (would be A- if not for Hardy pick)

Sure we lost 3 starting D linemen and only picked up one but do you realize that midseason last year we picked up Tank Tyler and Leonard Louis, who both were placed on injured reserve. we also signed Ed Johnson who was a starter for the colts a few years ago under Meeks and Corvey Irvin was drafted in the third round but never was able to play a down last year because he was also placed on IR. We might have unproven Defensive linemen but I believe they are going to suprise us this year because Fox relies heavily on the DL and we havent drafted or signed anyone which shows how much faith he has in those guys. Don't forget Everett Brown showed flashes of what he could do in a very limited role, Brayton is back and Hardy was projected top ten talent before his injury. Hardy had an injury on his wrist that ended his season last year and a foot injury the year before. Injuries are part of the game, when the guy was healthy he was a beast and he will only have a limited role this year which will decrease his chance of injury

Note: Louis had 6 tackles and a sack in his only 2 games he played which against Atlanta and Philly and Tank Tyler played well in a limited role with us.

also, Norwood has the ability to play OLB and DE. fox said during his press conference that Norwood would start out at OLB, but it is highly likely that he will be switched to DE if there is a need at that position. so view it as drafting 1.5 DL

I agree. A+ is WAY too generous.

I'm more inclined to say a C+ or a B-... mostly because of the unneeded selling of future draft picks.

Maybe the Panthers value D linemen the way the Oakland A's value relievers. They might have figured out a way to get less with/for more at that position.

The A's have some of the best pitching coaches in the game (both at the Major League level and in the minor leagues).

They do lots of things other teams don't - like teaching the change-up to every guy in the system and limiting their use of the slider before they hit the majors......then they pitch them till their arms fall off/someone offers a great package for them.

I don't know if our D-line coaches are that good.
