In doing pre-draft research, not that he thought he'd have a chance to get Clausen, Fox talked to Charlie Weis, his good friend and the former Irish coach. Weis and Fox are close. Fox is sure Weis wouldn't lie to him. "Charlie said he's probably the best he's ever had,'' Fox said. "He said, 'Take this guy. Trust me.' Everyone I talked to, including a couple of people at Notre Dame, said the character issue was BS. So we picked him.''

as far as a QB being full of himself, I don't think that is a problem. obviously you don't want it to be as bad as Ryan Leaf, but that is an attitude you would like a starting QB to have. Look at Phillip Rivers, probably one of the cockiest players in the NFL, and I think that level of self assurance help him go out there and perform.

Phillip Rivers also lacks maturity - and I'm not talking maturity in the football sense. Standing on the bench and yelling obscenities at the opposing team's fans is something I hope we don't see Clausen doing.

very true, but on the field his cockiness is what helps him lead his team. he goes out there and knows he is the leader... off the field is a different issue, and I don't think that clausen is anything like him in that regard. I at least hope not.

There were reports that he was lobbying hard to pick Clausen, but the higher ups felt they had other more pressing needs...and as X-Clown said, I don't think Pioli wants to give the impression he made a mistake with Cassell.

One thing I think a lot of people are missing is that matt moore could be that Steve beurlein type backup that coaches drool for. For years the panthers haven't had a quality backup and worse case scenerio clausen will beat out Moore and we have a GREAT backup. The kinda guy who can come in a win 4 outta 5 games when you need him to. What's so bad about that?

Yeah, Fox and Hurney weren't this excited over Williams, Beason, or Stewart, and those guys turned out to be home run picks.

That's why you wait until the guy is on the field before you sing praises or berate a guy.

Imagine having a back-up QB that you could use as a bargining chip for at least a first round draft pick.
