Matt Moore will start Week 1.

I don't think there is any doubt Matt Moore will be the starter this year. I think there is the feeling that since Clausen is familiar with the offense because he played for Charlie Weis and Jeff Davidson is a protoge of his that Clausen will be given a chance to start right off the bat.

And it's not baseless either. Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, and Ben Roethlisberger are the top examples of rookie QB's, when supported by a quality running game and defense, can win games. But on the flip side, there are disproportionately more failure stories when it comes to starting a rookie QB than successes.

So with that, I think that it would be foolish to start Clausen right away. Matt Moore played well enough the previous season to be given the starting job heading into training camp and pending injury, should start Week 1. But of course, Clausen should be ready to start if Moore falters.

Wait -- so there is doubt that Matt Moore will start? ;)

I think that Matt goes into TC in the #1 position. However, I do think it is a true open competition situation.

I think that Moore wins the job and plays well.

I also think having Clausen as a back-up will do him a ton of good. He will only learn adn get better. In addition, playing the back-up role might also help check his ego at the door.

The first pick Matt Moore throws expect a bunch of people to blow up and demand Clausen (I'm going to avoid this board for a couple of days no doubt)...... I just hope the Panthers have the liberty to sit Clausen for at least a year to let him mature mentally. It did Aaron Rodgers a lot of good

The great news is the Panthers have three promising quaterbacks on roster....... I don't know if I've ever been able to say that with full certainty

Honestly with the comment Fox made about Moore's personality it makes me think he's not going to be very loyal.

If we drafted Clausen with Jake around he would have come out saying the plan.

Instead he said he called Moore twice, and that it was a private conversation.

I don't remember him saying that Moore is coming into the camp as the starter, but I've watched a lot of press conferences so I can't remember everything.

Fox and Hurney both said it after Delhomme was cut. In fact, they gave it as a compelling reason why he was let go.

Still the plan? Probably. This is still John Fox we're talking about.

But...they have options, and options are always nice to have.

I think that honestly it's a 50-50 shot between one or the other starting. I know that others will say that Moore deserves a shot because of the fact that he's been here longer and that he's 6-2 in the 8 starts that he's had. Well, part of that success is due to the fact that he was not game planned for. Teams were more focused on stopping Double Trouble and didn't really have much film on Moore to study in the first place outside of preseason with the scrubs and old film from 2007 (I believe that was the year). Moore has never actually had to adjust due to people trying to take away things that he does and exploit his tendencies. That means that once they actually start to focus the game plan on him and he actually has to adjust, we don't know if he'll be able to do so. Maybe it is a full blown open QB competition, or maybe they're doing it to make Matt step up and take the reins and make the team his. To me, it's real telling that the reason why they had to cut Jake was because so many of the players (except maybe Smitty) would've wanted him to start over Matt this year, even after the success that Matt had at the end of the season. That's why I think that it's open season for the QB position, because honestly, this is no one's team right now. Someone is gonna have to step up and take the reins and make it theirs. May the best QB win though, cause all i want is to see my team win.

The only way Moore stays a Panther is if he takes us to the Playoffs, or Clausen proves to be a bust if and when he plays. Matt signed a one year deal. If he takes us to the Playoffs he'll get a multi-year offer and we may try and trade Clausen and keep Pike as the back-up. If Matt starts for most of the year and we go nowhere, then Clausen comes in late (like Moore would do with Jake) and does well, Matt is good as gone. It's Playoffs or Pack Your Bags for Moore, assuming Clausen isn't trash in the NFL.

agreed. there is much more invested in clausen with a higher expected ceiling. even if both play the exact same, we'd most likely stick with clausen as he is younger, and we'd be heavily invested in his contract being a second round pick compared to moore in his final year. it wouldn't cost a dime to let him walk at the end of the season.

moore is the present.

clausen is the future.
