I don't like Jimmy Clausen because...

not substantially.

of course we've all heard the stories about jerry rice catching bricks as a kid, but if a player isn't a snatcher in college (grabs the ball out of the air instead of letting it get close to his body) then he's not going to be one in the pros.

you want to be able to catch it away from you in the pros because it allows you the opportunity to catch and run separately (make adjusts without breaking your routes) and not let it get broken up during the tackle.

he might develop it, but it's a mental thing as much as a technique thing.

Thanks for the information. I hope he can hang onto the ball and become the next Panthers #2 WR.

I hope your wrong, because our season will hinge on defense. It will be nice to be healthy and run the ball, but if we can't keep the games close then Davidson will go back into panic mode and call for 40 passes a game. That will do for Moore what it did for Delhomme, and while it makes for some entertaining posts I would rather see us win.

I hope I am wrong as well but it is going to be tough to gell this defensive line in a matter of 6 weeks in a unit that can effectively pressure the quarterback. Our back seven will be mediocre at best without a great pass rush.

I agree that we would struggle in an offensive shootout. But at least we might have some guys to throw it to now. ;) Problem is our offense is built to grind it out not pass to catch up. That requires the defense to be good and keep it close. A tall order for Meeks and Baker this year, especially early.

...of his face and his haircut...

That is all.

Racist :sosp:

As for me, I hated the pick with a passion...until we got LaFell.

My fear going into the draft was that the Panthers would use their first pick on something that wasn't an immediate need (like QB) and in the process get screwed out of picking the kind of receiver they needed to fill a glaring hole this season. They took a big risk there, but when the next pick came with both LaFell and Mardy Gilyard still available, I breathed an audible sigh of relief.

I've watched a ton of LSU games over the past several years (wife is a Tiger), and I'm not worried a bit about them. He doesn't have the drops, he makes big catches, he holds on to the ball well, and he's not afraid of contact.

At the same time, he won't run away from anyone and he's never been dominant. But he has made a lot of big plays over the years for the Tigers (including a TD in the National Champ game against Ohio State where he made Malcolm Jenkins look slow), and he's done it with some pretty lousy QBs throwing him the ball.

All my LSU friends say he will drop a lot of passes he should catch. but I do like his physical playing style..his hands were I think the smallest of any WR

Give it a rest. It's not like there are tons of former Panthers out starring for other teams around the league because they weren't "given a fair chance" by Fox.

Fox wants to win, and will start the people he thinks give the Panthers the best chance of winning. He will make that decision based on what he sees in practice, in games, and from what his assistants tell him. If Moore can't beat out Clausen, it's not because the game is rigged, it's because Clausen is better.

I've read this argument ever since Friday night. Because that is what happened last year?? Jake was the best guy to start last year?? After losing games himself repeatedly, and Fox never would pull him. Took an injury to pull Jake and Matt went 4-1 and had the team finish .500. Even during the injury Fox waited before committing to Matt and putting Jake on IR. Everyone saw Willilams was better than Foster; yet Fox kept putting Foster out there. Fact is that Fox has his "guys" and will play them.

You do realize that if Fox does not get a contract extension did this year that he can't take Clausen with him, right?

We will see early whether Moore is the guy or not. I think it is going to take time for the defense to gel this year. The offense is going to be under pressure to score points. Hopefully Moore comes out ready and able to pick up where he left off. If he struggles and we go on a losing streak, then we will see if he is the leader or not. See if he earns their respect when they lose as much as he does when they win. Right now Moore is the seasoned veteran. Surprising Fox would risk this year again like he did last year when McCown went on IR ad we had no seasoned veteran behind the starter. If Clausen hits the field at all this year or next, we are in official rebuilding mode.

Actually, I think this defense will gel pretty quickly this year. Just about every starter on the roster has been in Meeks' system for a year. Last year, it was all brand new even for the veterans.
