I don't like Jimmy Clausen because...

Give it a rest. It's not like there are tons of former Panthers out starring for other teams around the league because they weren't "given a fair chance" by Fox.

Fox wants to win, and will start the people he thinks give the Panthers the best chance of winning. He will make that decision based on what he sees in practice, in games, and from what his assistants tell him. If Moore can't beat out Clausen, it's not because the game is rigged, it's because Clausen is better.

I love the LaFell pick. :)

And SLJ, consider that he may NOT have earned it, but was given it out of desperation by a coaching staff that really wished McCown wasn't on IR. Moore couldn't beat him in TC, right?

Sure, he went 4-1. Look at the defensive stats over those games too. He looked good, and now has even more ammunition to say he deserves the job, but he still has to earn it.

I think Moore is our starter in week one. I don't know if he still is in week 16.

We will see early whether Moore is the guy or not. I think it is going to take time for the defense to gel this year. The offense is going to be under pressure to score points. Hopefully Moore comes out ready and able to pick up where he left off. If he struggles and we go on a losing streak, then we will see if he is the leader or not. See if he earns their respect when they lose as much as he does when they win. Right now Moore is the seasoned veteran. Surprising Fox would risk this year again like he did last year when McCown went on IR ad we had no seasoned veteran behind the starter. If Clausen hits the field at all this year or next, we are in official rebuilding mode.

Can that be coached?

not substantially.

of course we've all heard the stories about jerry rice catching bricks as a kid, but if a player isn't a snatcher in college (grabs the ball out of the air instead of letting it get close to his body) then he's not going to be one in the pros.

you want to be able to catch it away from you in the pros because it allows you the opportunity to catch and run separately (make adjusts without breaking your routes) and not let it get broken up during the tackle.

he might develop it, but it's a mental thing as much as a technique thing.

I've watched a ton of LSU games over the past several years (wife is a Tiger), and I'm not worried a bit about them. He doesn't have the drops, he makes big catches, he holds on to the ball well, and he's not afraid of contact.

At the same time, he won't run away from anyone and he's never been dominant. But he has made a lot of big plays over the years for the Tigers (including a TD in the National Champ game against Ohio State where he made Malcolm Jenkins look slow), and he's done it with some pretty lousy QBs throwing him the ball.

I hope your wrong, because our season will hinge on defense. It will be nice to be healthy and run the ball, but if we can't keep the games close then Davidson will go back into panic mode and call for 40 passes a game. That will do for Moore what it did for Delhomme, and while it makes for some entertaining posts I would rather see us win.

Lafell is the next Moose. He is just what we need on this team. Dwayne Jarrett with an attitude. Might even pressure Jarrett to work harder. I don't care what is big or small on him as long as he catches the ball and learns to block. I see him as someone who could actually start this year depending on how quickly he picks up the offense.
