Platooning Talent for a Weak Link Position

RG spot. Bridges was average at best. Brought in Vincent/that Samoan dude/Drafted Bernadeau/Schwartz. Also drafted Robinson. Player fought for the spot. Vincent was excellent for a year and some change, now Bernadeau/Robinson are primed to beome a multiyear starter at the position.

While we had Williams it's always best to have another option. We drafted Stewart. Then we picked up Goodson/Sutton/Fiametta the next season. Now we have arguably one of the best backfield groups in the NFL

I feel like another position was done this way in the FOX era but I am burned out from the draft.

Forward to this Draft

QB: Moore is penciled in as the starter, but he has no solid backup. Panthers had contacted Campbell before the draft, then had Clausen fall into their laps, grabbed Tony Pike after another huge fall. They are supposedly high on Cantwell as well. Platooned Talent/Let them fight it out.

CB: While it appears We have solid depth at the position consider this. Richard Marshall has publicly stated he wants top 10 CB money . Panthers go out and pick 3 project CB/S players. All with boom or bust potiential who can help on ST's while they grow. Platooning Talent/Let them Fight/Grow.

Yep, it was definitely not a typical Fox/Hurney draft (no O-linemen wtf?!!) but I like where this is heading. We have three guys with Franchise QB potential competing for the starting job, and a million bodies at WR, CB and DT all fighting for the starting spots. I'll be damned if we don't have some quality starters after camp.

I agree, 2 qb's in the draft?! Fox and Hurney never liked to draft QB's especially early like where we got Clausen. But I do like the depth we added, we just got the best athletes at those positions. With this draft I hope we can solidify our secondary, a wr core, and finally a face of the franchise at QB for a good while.

I thought they would place a larger importance on DT but I am thinking Fox is going to skim players off other rosters once the cuts start happening.

I would say it was a pretty good draft, you can definitely tell where the Panthers want to achieve consistency

i am really surprised we didn't draft at least one OT throughout the draft. think one could have been taken over friggin tony pike.

also, chris harris is not that old right now, dude's only 27. thomas davis is older by a few months

I agree with this in theory. With the RG competition we knew that if no one stepped up at the very least Vincent would be serviceable for the year.

With the running back competition we knew that D Will could handle the majority of the work if Stewart didn't heal well the first year and the other guys didn't pan out.

With the cornerback position you've got Gamble and most likely Marshall. Even if Marshall demands a trade you've got Captain who can at least get you through the season.

With the quarterback competition this year you don't have that fall back option that is guaranteed to get you through the year without derailing your season. Moore did well in his limited playing time but there's not a complete enough body of work to say that he's the guy for an entire season. The platooning plan would work a lot better if there was a veteran quarterback in the mix that may have already reached their ceiling but is good enough to be a stopgap for the year.

TE has sucked for years. Until LAST year really.

3 straight drafts we picked a middle round TE. King/Rosario/Barnbridge Also signed some vets along the way to tutor them. Now we have at least a "decent" group.

We've accumulated it over the years and it has kind of come to fruition this year.

Moore has NFL playing time and can start. He finished the end of last year very strong. I don't see a vet floating around that is better than him physically.

Now if you are just wanting someone to hand off the ball and not poo their pants then a Marc Bulger like player wouldn't hurt.

lol I'm due for one about twice a year.

I think we've done a good job with DT too. Leonard, Tyler, Ed Johnson, Landri... When we were spending those picks everyone was mad about it, but there was a method to the madness. All the guys are young and have a chance to become the full-time starter and have a huge impact. I like what I saw out of Leonard and I think Tyler will be good as well.

Johnson and Landri seem like Meeks' type of guys at DT.

I just wish we would've taken this approach to WR a long time ago instead of scraping through trash heaps.

Moore's proven that he can play in the NFL not necessarily be the starting quarterback for an entire season. I want Moore to step up and play well this year at the very worst to give Clausen time to get used to the speed of the game and at the very best to be the new franchise quarterback. Is Campbell or another vet a better longterm answer than Moore? Probably not. Do they have a more guaranteed return THIS year. Absolutely. With an established (and not as full of potential) quarterback at least you know what you'll be getting all season long. Would that be better or worse than Moore? That's what the preseason is for but at least then there's a back up plan.

we have done this to an extent at DT as well. we'll probably be adding some more through the offseason.
