Cleveland Browns front office boss Mike Holmgren and coach Eric Mangini say they drafted quarterback Colt McCoy to develop him over the next few years, not to put him on the field in 2010.

"I don't expect him to play this year," Holmgren said of McCoy, per James Walker of ESPN.com. "We did not draft him to play this year."

Mangini agreed with Holmgren's assessment.

"I am completely comfortable with a quarterback coming in and spending time to develop his craft," Mangini said.

Jake Delhomme is likely to enter the season as the starter, with Seneca Wallace as the backup and McCoy as the No. 3.

makes sense, mccoy isn't nfl ready. why would you start him? it's not like they're one piece away from a championship. He can learn a whole lot from delhomme. Honestly I think it kinda sucks that Delhomme isn't here to mentor clausen, clausen could stand to learn a thing or two from him.

I must say, after years of watching football and having an interest about when highly touted rookie QBs of OTHER teams get their first shot at playing time, it has made me like the feeling of uncertainty even more now that we have OUR OWN potential franchise QB to look forward to.......And yes, I understand that Moore has a good of a chance as any QB we have on our roster at being the face of the franchise.

It is rough knowing that after having a guy like Delhomme carrying the torch for so long, always manning up to his mistakes and always putting the team first, we have to worry about a guy like Clausen turning into a diva.

I miss Jake now:(

I would tend to believe that if the FO had any idea whatsoever that they would end up with Clausen, Jake would still be here. They made the right choice for the scenario at the time though. Moore was/is going to be the starter, no need to have Jake lurking in the background.

WTF do you want him to teach Clausen? How to lock onto one receiver? How to heave up a pass in the air and hope for the best? How to fumble it every time you get sacked from behind? How to overthrow a wide open WR by at least 6 feet.... I personally am glad that Delhomme is not here to mentor....

On a side note, I feel bad for Delhomme facing the Steelers, Ravens and Bengals D twice a year behind a porous O-line

START JAKE! :D

Yeah, not surprised really. Holmegren likes to take it slow with his QB's. I think that may be good for McCoy too, just because I see him throwing a lot of picks in his rookie year.

Surely he won't throw as many as Jake is probably going to throw. :D
