Panthers and Horn talks will be interesting

Recommended Posts

Reading this thread is insane - some of y'all are truly disconnected from reality.  25-yr old and one of the top 5 CB's in the league - Pro Bowler.  Without the injury history he would demand $23-24M per year from numerous teams no question, bidding war.  Spotrac has his Market at $19.6M/yr - that is likely the best we can hope for and is HIS VALUE.  "If he will take $13M maybe, but not $19M" - are you insane?  NFL players make their money from ages 24-30.  That is the prime years for most positions - that is what they cost and are worth.  Teams don't win championships by paying their top players on each side of the ball the lowest contracts at the position.  There is no way he takes $13M in his prime - no way at all.

He is one of the 3 best players on just about any defense in the league.  If you wanna win you spend on the top 3 players on each side of the ball outside of rookie deals.  What are you saving money for?  To spread it over 20 other mediocre role players?  Supply and demand people - some of y'all don't understand how this works.  The only decision we have is IF we wanna have one of top 3 players on defense be a CB - how much we pay for him is barely negotiable.  $19M makes him 12th - gimme a break - by the time the contract ends he would be the 20th paid in his prime.  Come on.

No real rush. We have him for 12.5 million until they can agree.

Actually there is a reason - Free Agency.  We have 8 weeks and this is a huge unknown for how much money we have to spend for the next 3-6 years.  If this doesn't get done fairly soon we should be concerned about it happening at all.

Amazing all the fans on this board that continually want to overpay for players. Burns was overrated as hell and some on this board went into mourning when he got traded. Now he's doing fug all in new York and getting a huge paycheck.

You don't pay an elite guy, elite money, to be elite half the time.

In 2023 Burns had 8.0 sacks in 16 games for the Panthers.

In 2024 he had 8.5 sacks in 17 games for the Giants. He got that whopping contract from NY and finished with fewer sacks than Dexter Lawrence (9.0), a DT. The Giants were also a worse team this year than we were. I think we clearly made the right decision to let Burns go. He's a good player...not a great/elite player. His presence did not make a significant impact on NY, which is one of the worst teams in the NFL heading into 2025. We were wise to move on from him.

I think this site over values him.  Is he our best DB yes and it ain’t even close.  Is he top 10 corner? I dunno had some games where teams didn’t look too scared to throw his way. And don’t get me started on the injury thing.  I’ll pretty much bet if we sign him to a big contract he doesn’t play half the year. I’m skeptical of players who seem to have good years when it’s contract time

This is the most ridiculous take ever.  Which games did he get thrown at?  He was 2nd in the NFL at completion % against behind only Stingley.  He was top 5 in snap to thrown at.  The only games this year where WR's had big days were TB when Horn was out and Dallas when he never covered Lamb.  He was a finalist for the All-pro Team.  Judge his injury history but saying he isn't that good or had a mediocre season is ridiculous.

Agree with you mostly - luckily you can structure contracts in a way that they aren't guaranteed so that guys like this can get paid if they perform, and not if they don't.  Huge difference between a $100M contract with $30M guaranteed vs $75M.  I'd bet we shoot for around $20M with lower guaranteed which is absolutely worth it.

Exactly, and the same people are the ones who cry when we see our players doing well on other teams.  Horn proved he can stay healthy this year, he made the pro bowl, deserves to be paid like a top 5 CB, only thing that is really debatable is the size of guaranteed money.

Hate to say it but if he needs Pat Surtain money, let him walk. For something lower but still good compensation, re-sign. He’s a good albeit not always healthy player. Focus on the pass rush and deal with one tier lower coverage if your rush can get to the QB. I mean look at what Ron did with garbage at corner for years with quality pass rushers

He's not going to get Surtain money who's in the conversation for Devensive Player of the Year.  Why do we assume that he's not going to be rational with his demands.

Second, I disagree on just relying on the pass rush.  I strongly believe you need an elite player in every part of the defense (defensive line, linebacker, and secondary).  You can supplement with other guys but you can't just load up on the pass rush and expect to be successful.

I dont know what he is asking but the fact that morgan has been trying to get something done for months according to kaye and person (i believe) seems like a tiny red flag.  All in all I think they get something done and hopefully its reasonable.

After watching our team give away all of its star players recently and seeing the results, you would think this board would learn its lesson. It’s hilarious seeing some of these takes saying they would pay him like a middle of the pack CB because of his previous injuries. The second he hit free agency there would be bidding wars to get him.
