The Official QB Competition Thread

CarolinaClausen

Recommended Posts

This is what a lot of fans have been wanting for a long time! A real chance to have QB's compete and they all are high quality players.

Depth Chart:

#1 Matt Moore

#2 Jimmy Clausen

#3 Tony Pike

Of course the depth can change at any time but Moore has the upper hand ending last season with a 4-1 record and with a 95 Passer rating. Clausen expects to come in and try for the starting job. This could be very exciting and dramatic at the same time. You never know if Clausen holds out for 1st round money or not. If he does, then he clearly falls behind and won't start for at least 1-2 seasons. Let's hope he has learned something and is humble coming into Training camp, I know for a fact he will be competitive. Along with the other big QB Tony Pike who stands at 6'6.

This season is going to be very exciting, I can't wait to watch Training Camp and the QB rotation during Pre-Season.

Don't be surprised if the season starts with Moore at 1, Clausen at 2, and Cantwell still at 3 with Pike on the practice squad.

Your an idiot. If Pike is put on the practice squad he will be snatched up by another team! Huntwell isn't that good. He played against 3rd and 4th string players last year in the pre-season and was on the practice squad. He will be bumped back down to practice squad and even thinking that the NFL potential Tony Pike would go lower on the Depth Chart than #3 is retarded.

Moore, Clausen, Pike

Cantwell goes to Practice Squad, Bank on it!

I agree. I think it will be: Moore, Clausen, Pike.

This would be 1 scenario where Fox would be smart to sit a rookie....even if he is slightly out playing Moore. I doubt that will happen, but for all of the talk about him being the 'most NFL ready QB in the draft', a rookie needs time to let the game slow down for him. You cannot ingest a whole playbook that quickly & we should not dumb-dwon the playbook for a QB.

Yeah the only issue I see is whether Fox will make logical choices. Not keeping Moore in too long if he sucks or conversely pulling him too fast just because we have the name at #3.

Pretty amazing we have 3 potential NFL QBs at this point

Let's not get too excited. Remember, Cleveland thought that just over a year ago with Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn. I wouldn't bet the farm just yet!

Also, pre-season doesn't mean diddly! Games are what count! Pre-season you don't see a teams best players for very long, nor are they going at it full strength. It's more of a serious scrimmage. (Why do you think the Colts go 1-3, 0-4 every year, but are close the tops in wins each of the last 12-13 seasons? Besides having the best QB in football.)

The problem with Cleveland though, is that it was Cleveland. Bad coaching and poor general managing have lead to a long demise for the Browns. When you are trying to develop a Quarterback in the NFL while abiding by the three year rule, where in the third season they start to hit their stride, you do not trade away a Donte Stallworth, Kellen Winslow jr., and also a Braylon Edwards. It was basically them asking him who the playmakers were on the team, and then getting rid of all of them.

This team is going to be good this season regardless of who is at the helm so long as the coaching decides to pound the rock early in the season and early in games. They might as well call it open competition coming into camp and then if Clausen is showing flashes of being ready, throw him out there and let him get experience.

Matt Moore has played well enough in his limited time that if they do go with Clausen as the starter from now until the foreseeable future, you may be able to ship Moore elsewhere like Oakland for draft picks or a player, but only if you believe Pike is going to be a career serviceable backup.

i was a skins fan before i became a panthers fan and i remember in like 95 the redskins had young unproven qb trent green( like matt moore) and went out and drafted tennessee junior heath shuler(jimmy clausen) in the 1st round then gus frerotte(tony pike) in the 7th.

if you dont remember how that ended up well the 7th rounder frerotte took over for shuler after he sucked it up for awhile. frerotte made the pro bowl and played for 15 pretty good years. trent green later took over for frerotte and later won a superbowl with the rams as a backup and made a couple probowls while throwing for 4000 yards a few times with the chiefs. heath shuler bounced around for a couple years until he gave it up and got into realastate and later became a congressman.

im just saying

It's a good comparison. I think Moore has shown a great deal of potential but the Panthers obviously don't want to bet the farm on someone with only a handful of NFL starts, even though they have been good ones. They bought an insurance plan with Clausen and then bought an insurance plan on that with Pike. If none of these QBs play well this year, it'll be house cleaning time, for sure.
