The best thing about this board is seeing people cry NO MATTER WHO THE PANTHERS TAKE.

Yeah, I don't really get all the boo hooing either. If there is one thing that every football fan should know is that despite a former college player's ranking in the draft, you never know what a guy is made of until he reaches the NFL playing level. Other than the unnecessary trading of the second round pick next year, I'm ok with our picks.

This draft may not pay immediate dividends like some would have hoped, but I like it best for the year after next in terms of impact.

Brandon LaFell pick I called after the first round ended. I knew he was going to end up as a Panther because I read his bio, saw his stats, checked up on his youtube and everything about him screamed a big physical body to replace Moose. People saying "Jarrett v2", are out to lunch entirely. Even if he busts, he's not the same kind of bust. This is a kid that loves contact. He loves to block, has a great attitude about playing whatever role he needs to play, and relishes contact. Jarrett has amazing hands, lacks breakout speed, and has had his toughness questioned. The only thing these two guys have in common is their weight... but uneducated opinions will rule the day. Plus, even though LaFell lacks elite speed, he has strong agility and route running potential because he's a hard working kid. Jarrett is a long, athletic, and rangy kid with tremendous hands with below average football smarts and work ethic. LaFell is a squat, low to the ground, physical, tough, and hard working guy with average measurables but great all around potential. He can do more than make one handed catches.

Armanti Edwards is a player like we've needed for a while now. He has the ability to make people miss and will be a candidate for the return game right out of the gate. He's slippery, has a natural physical gift, and translates well to the WR position. Plus, he's an option for opening the playbook for some unconventional style plays that can utilize his throwing ability. Was he drafted too soon? For sure, but if you have your player identified as the guy you want then you get aggressive about getting him. The way I see it is that the Panthers more than likely offered that 2nd to St. Louis to move up from 48th to 33rd but they didn't take it. When Clausen came available, that pick became free to be moved again. So instead of just netting Clausen with that pick, they netted Clausen AND Edwards instead.

As for the Clausen pick? Zero risk in it. He's a Top 10 talent, and even right up until the draft was considered in the mix for 1st overall, that fell due to circumstances and the surprising case that most teams have "their guy", and didn't want to pay him first round pick money. People have complained for so long, especially at this position, about loyalty clouding judgment and now when Carolina decides to bring in a legit competition for Matt Moore, all of a sudden they're "hating on him", and he's under appreciated etc. Everybody in this league is fighting for their job on a daily basis. Even the elite guys have to watch their back because NFL means not for long and we know this better than anybody. Would you rather the Panthers be blind to their area of need because they have faith in Moore or would you rather them address the need and be SAFE about the most important position on the field and bring in a guy to push Moore and eventually take over for him? I don't know who you guys think could push Moore here, but Cantwell is not the guy. If anything, Matt Moore heard this news and went immediately to the weight room or the film room to get the advantage. If he's any kind of athlete, then he welcomes this challenge.

The draft was a success not just for value, but because for the first time we had an atypical Panthers draft and really addressed our future as well as our present when in the past we have sold out for our present at every possible turn.

Plus Edwards can be the 3rd string QB instead of Cantwell. So we dont have to carry 3 QBs. Edwards college stats were much better than Cantwell's. Plus we have alot more special teams guys that have more value for our team than a 3rd string QB that will never see the field most likely.

Interesting thought....

This was my exact thought. With all the ST specialists we are bringing in, we need to find extra roster spots from somewhere, and this is one place to free one up.
