Did you guys hear Gruden after the Broncos pick?

Quite possible.

People used to say that about Matt Millen before the disaster that was the Lions.

Eeeehhhh, not really.

He was about 50-50 after the Super Bowl year (for which a fair number of people give Tony Dungy a lot of credit).

Including the Super Bowl season, he was 57-55 in Tampa (winning pct of .509). He actually had a higher winning percentage in Oakland (.594) .

Overall he's right at 54%. By contract, John Fox's winning perdentage with the Panthers is 0.555.

As far as the playoffs, other than the previously discussed Super Bowl, the Bucs only made the playoffs twice in the next six years and were one and done both times.

Throw in that the reason he ended up being let go was that his players all hated his guts and basically threatened to mutiny if they had to play for him without Monte Kiffin.

yep, he won that super bowl with tony dungy's team, then sucked there after trying to put together his own. Love him as an announcer, don't want him anywhere near the panthers as a coach.

I think Josh McDaniels is a decent coach.

Decent coaches don't:

A) Piss off their franchise quarterback by trying to trade for a below average system QB(Matt Cassell)

B) Bench their best player(Marshall) in a game that they had to win to make the playoffs

C) Trade a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round pick for a quarterback that isn't even better than their 2nd string quarterback. The Golden Calf of Bristol won't make an impact for years.

..just sayin'

although he's a pretty good announcer, i'm more fond of his coaching. i mean, he had almost nothing but winning seasons when he was with the buccs, then he leaves, and the buccs completely fail the following year.

put it to you this way, if Fox is out the door next year, i'd rather have gruden over cowher any day.

I definitely wouldn't be opposed to Gruden coming here.

This was after the The Golden Calf of Bristol pick? Yeah I thought that was a huge reach. Buffalo or Cleveland would've probably picked him up in the 2nd though.

I actually disagree with this. No one outside the organisation really knows the ins and outs, but here is my take.

McDaniels tries to stamp down his authority and get on with his way of playing the game. Cutler and Marshall were used to having a little more freedom in what they did and said and so McDaniels put them in their place. They did not like it and tried to force his hand.

You can't have players trying to influence the team against the will of the head coach and I truely believe Cutler was very upset with Shanahan being booted, especially for an inexperience McDaniels. When he didn't get his way, he refused to get in line with the new FO and it created an impass.

Marshall on the other hand is a suspension waiting to happen and he had constantly caused small problems throughout the season. If McDaniels buckles and plays Marshall, simply in an attempt to win the game, it undermines the discipline he was trying to install from the beginning. All of a sudden all players know that no matter what they do, they will be picked if they are the best 'talent'. Did we play Smitty when he punched Lucas, or did we suspend him, despite him being our only receiving threat?

Not sure about The Golden Calf of Bristol, but the trade was completely fair value. Most seem to want to leave out that Denver received a 4th in exchange, so it actually was only the 2nd & 3rd. However, considering the trade value was fair by the value chart, you can only judge the player. Who has not played a down yet. Who was reportedly wanted by Buffalo. Can't judge him till he has had a chance.

i think it was pretty dumb, considering most teams would've passed on him till the 2nd. especially considering the teams picking after them at 25. but i do think it was a good pick-up, regardless of where they picked him. they've got kyle orton to run the offense right now, and he's done fairly well (albeit, he had brandon marshall carry him through the season, but he'll have demaryus to do that now). and josh mcdaniels has done well with QBs in the past, i.e. tom brady/matt cassel. i think mcdaniels sees the determination in The Golden Calf of Bristol and is willing to take a long shot on him...

think of it this way, 3 years down the road, he'll be tom brady, or ryan leaf. they've got a 50/50 shot.

I think he is a good coach but let's be honest, He inherited that SB winning team/defense from Tony Dungy(and knew every play the raiders were going to run). The Bucs were fairly mediocre under Gruden other than 2002 when they went 12-4 and won the Superbowl and 2005 when they went 11-5. Gruden coached the Bucs for 7 seasons to Dungy's 6 and only has 3 more wins than Dungy in that span. I'd take Cowher over him any day.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
