QB School: Bryce Young vs Falcons

Recommended Posts

I like JT's film breakdown. He doesn't just evaluate Bryce's plays and decisions but he talks a lot about Canales scheme. Compared to Reich's year, Canales is a way more creative play caller, there's numerous times JT has said Canales has "schemed him open." He also evaluates the WR/TEs, this is a young group and they are all learning just how to play the position, to see Bryce play well with them is a testament to his skill. This offseason has to be about giving Bryce an alpha go to weapon, a veteran presence.

Every Mahomes needs a Kelce/Hill, Rodgers/Adams, Brady/Gronk, Burrow/Chase. Let's get Bryce his alpha and he'll be a top 10 QB next season.

Some thoughts:

2:38 - Bryce might've been a little too quick in throwing after resetting his base but great catch by XL. If he can catch balls like this, that’s something both should work on. Put the ball high, let XL pluck the ball away from his body.

9:48 - If/when we get Brooks back, I could see Canales draw up plays like that for him. Or if we go back to having gadget players like Shenault on the roster.

12:15 - I'm more of generally not liking playcalls with our current roster that asks our guys to go horizontal near the LOS.

16:38 - Want to say the play was designed to have a natural pick which - had it worked - would allow an easy completion. But the defender stuck with XL. Couldn't tell if XL extended his hands to make the catch but unlikely. Another thing he'll need to learn so that he can wall off defenders and force them into more contact and better chance of drawing PI.

18:38 - Yep, saw right away this could've gone to XL for an easier TD. But somewhat encouraging that he was going to come open. Then again, I think this was a similar route to the one he ran against the Eagles that he dropped.

21:29 - I swear JT is that teacher from A Christmas story who ends up writing A++++ on the board. This type of play with Thielen has become a go-to between the two, I've noticed.

23:47 - I'm trying to find it again but one of the players said that this play was actually ran on Friday and there was someone - maybe not actually Canales - that added the wrinkle of Tremble switching to the post. They immediately recognized the play when it was run.

27:12 - An example of one the problems that keeps cropping up; two receivers occupying the same area. Hard to say if it's more a design issue or an execution one. Leaning towards the latter.

33:04 - Might actually be my favorite play of the game that wasn't the Bryce Curry one. It's all the little things needed to make this work and the execution was as good as one could ask for.

35:20 - Thought I saw Bryce pointing as though he’s directing a receiver except that was likely a dummy to freeze the defenders enough to run it in. Not the first time he's done it.

37:29 - Would’ve preferred a pass more like the one at 2:38. JT’s got the height. We should exploit that more and let him make contested catches.

JT either really likes Bryce, or Panthers fans are all over these videos, because any time Bryce plays well, we get a video.

JT loves Bryce, but he offsets it by sh*tting on Theilan every chance he gets. It's got me wondering, did Theilan steal his prom date in high school or something? He's got a personal vendetta against him for some reason.

I really appreciate these.  Like him or not, JT has played high level football at a place where I couldn't imagine.  I mean, I was 6th string DT in high school before I said "I'm going where the girls are!" =P

He's very bullish on Bryce, and I think JT wants to see him succeed.  I know many of us are all over these videos so he knows he's going to get the views on any BY video.  It's a feedback cycle almost, lol.  JT thinks BY is a legit QB.  Not perfect, he does point out error, and seems to go out of his way to insult Theilan's speed constantly.  It's almost funny.

Honestly, it just confirms what we've seen: BY found himself after being benched.  He's improved each week, made great plays, had a few stinkers along the way.

Let's build the rest of the team around Bryce.

    • I think a lot of wrs are going to go in the second round before we pick.  There are a lot of wr needy teams.  I think there will be a big run on them in the late 30s and 40s.
    • Interesting that they met with Walker three times and Cam Jackson twice.
