Honestly and I'm not at all trying to denigrate Evero here but can we really say he is even much of an upgrade over Snow? Yes the talent disparity is certainly a big difference but still it just seems like this would have been a good time to just reset there. Instead we're doubling down.

Their scheme is remarkably similar.   3-4 but mostly play out of the 3-3-5.   Terrible against the run.  Soft zone.

What proof of this is there? 

As DC, he oversaw mid-level defenses on teams with abysmal records (5-11, 2-15) and one of the worst defenses in history this year. Even those so-called "mid-level" defenses came on teams with historically bad offenses, where opposing teams didn’t have to do much win.

Does anyone really believe our defense was good last year? We had an offense that set records for how bad it was, and all teams needed to do was run the ball, control the clock, and cruise to victory.

Sure, we had some tough injuries this season, but let’s be honest—our defense couldn’t stop anyone.

What I gathered from the press conference is that they will get together soon then evaluate all phases of the team and make adjustments to the systems they have. I would assume that includes the defense as well. I will interested in seeing how that shakes out.

You wind up learning that some guys are just always gonna be better off as coordinators or position coaches.

I agree--as the coach, you deal with so much crap, and I am referring to the high school level.  College position coaches focus on depth--they really know every detail about technique, timing, angles, etc.  at their positions.  They KNOW football.  The coordinators and coaches, once position coaches, focus on everything else---game plan, overall timing, chemistry, media, etc.   If you think you got away with a mistake on film because during the team sessions the coordinators did not mention it, you NEVER got away with it when you went to your position room to watch the film--those coaches see everything and they deal with the players.  I can see where most of my position coaches did not want to mess with the politics and planning of football; they are all about execution.  Different animals.  I imagine in the pros, it is more extreme.  I think that is the reason few college HCs succeed in the NFL.

I strongly suspect behind the scenes he is being told to get his name out there.  There is just no scenario where we fire him today after we made him stay, suffered the injuries and had to sit our #1 pick for weeks.  That would be a whole lot of pie in the face.

Personal opinion but I feel like Evero’s defense is very player specific. Additionally, it’s definitely a bend but don’t break style of defense that relies on the offense beating themselves.

In 2022 the Broncos had a top 10 mark in expected points allowed per play. EPA loves long passes and the Broncos secondary was elite and kept everything in front of them which allows credence to the belief that Evero’s defense is truly a bend but don’t break defense that relies on elite secondary play.

Additionally, in 2022 the Broncos had a 91.2 coverage grade which was the best in the NFL and they also were top 10 in completion percentage allowed and touchdowns allowed.

The secondary needs more than Jaycee Horn to be successful. If Evero is truly back then Will Campbell (if available) or Malachi Starks needs to be the pick and we need to make a hard run at Justin Reid.

Evero’s scheme can get by with the front seven we have (if healthy) but it simply won’t work with the secondary we have.

I agree it seems kinda odd given everything being as it is. I was under the impression his contract was up but I suppose it's not. If they are truly only saying he is staying in hopes someone hires him to get a draft pick for him that is a bad look. If they let him go after all other positions are filled that's even worse, for us and him as we then would be out of candidates. I think they may actually keep him.

Let it play out. He may jump ship if a better offer comes along. Anything is possible at this point.
