Let's Talk Evero

There is a strong argument to support Evero.  How much can you teach it in a week, and with a zone concept there are a lot of switches and run supports etc etc that require chemistry--but when I see Safeties covering a guy who is getting nearly half of the QB's targets and blowing us up for nearly 200 yards and 2 TDs--I can't help but think the OC was sitting in the box laughing at how easy it was--but Evero was dealt no cards, lost a lot, and is now being blamed--so where do you draw the line and point the fingers?  I don't know.

We’ve seen it before, Lamb was running wild, on the opposite side of Horn, and no changes were made. An offensive coordinator’s dream.

I agree that Evero was dealt a rough hand, but I also haven’t seen him try to maximize the few good players he has. In addition, after a year like this, everyone needs a fresh start, it is the best for both parties, no hard feelings.

I watched him drop Sam Robertson into coverage today. If you don't know who that is google it real fast.

Also, Atlanta ran the same exact play to London twice before halftime. No adjustments made. No help for poor Shemar Bartholomew

That is when I felt we needed to say goodbye to Evero, haha.

Who would Canales target? I doubt Saleh says yes to us. Fraizer? Rivera? Wilks?

  • James Bettcher is the LBs coach in Cinci and is close with the Assistant Head Coach from their time in Arizona. He was the DC for Arians there before he retired and was expected to be Head Coach but the Cardinals hired Wilks the next year instead.

  • Kacy Rodgers is in Tampa as the DL coach and knows most of the staff.

  • Ken Norton Jr used to be the DC in Seattle when Dave and Dan Morgan were there, he is with the Commanders now.

  • Joe Cullen is the DL coach in KC. Obviously knows Brandt and KC is Top 5 against the run.

  • Sean Desai- No real connections other than a brief stint in Seattle with Dave but had a Top 10 defense in Philly before they let him go to hire Fangio. Is sitting on Harbaugh's staff in LA right now.

  • Also a long shot, but Jack Del Rio was Dan Morgan's DC here in 2002 so maybe some connection there.

I was looking for stuff that has nothing to do with the personnel--signs of adjustments and scheme.  Your point is valid.  If I saw players confused or getting burned, that would be one thing, but the zone coverage allowed London to get single coverage on the outside or pick apart the deep secondary in cover 2. AAAAHHH!!!  In fact, I noted that there was not that much motion because they knew we were in zone for the most part and they motioned to get London a better situation.  If they had an experienced QB, we would have been beaten, in my opinion.  Right about Lamb--and vs Tampa Bay, Baker hit Evans for 2 TDs but used him more selectively to get favorable match ups (he was not needed the entire game)--in fact, they did not adjust to Bucky Irving and he torched the Panthers for nearly 80 receiving yards in addition to over 100 yards of rushing (averaging nearly 6 yards a carry).  I just do not see Evero adjusting and I see OCs manipulating his system--I don't pretend to know as much football as he does, but I just don't see many changes.

I don't see any path forward that doesn't involve us turning the page there. It's for the best for both parties. Now it's only a matter of when not if.

On the one hand, the team gave him minimal resources to be successful. The defense was obviously the afterthought in the team building process. It’s like the offense was for basically two decades under Fox and Rivera. There are maybe 2 or 3 players on the defense that would even have a chance to start on other rosters.

On the other hand, I routinely saw Evero calling inappropriate defensive calls for the situation. Playing corners 5-7 yards off receivers on 3rd and 1. I saw lack of effort from defenders on many occasions. The Jamar Chase long TD comes to mind.

So I’m torn, because Evero wasn’t set up for success. But at the same time if they’re about to invest a large amount of resources into the defense, they might as well have the head coach hand pick his guy.

Nah, yall all trippin.  He was wonderful!  He’s the best!  So good in fact I’d hate for him to waste his talents stuck here.  Let him go be a head coach where he can put all this awesomeness on another more deserving city/team.  We don’t deserve anymore of his historic record breaking defensive genius.

I know, what a tragedy it would be if the Saints hired him.

I doubt Wilks would either.  I would like this opportunity--a team that had a strong second half of the season (4-5) with a QB who started figuring it out.  Knowing he'd get some players in the draft.  Knowing the coach is offense and he'd have total control of the defense.  Saleh might bite--I don't see Wilks or Rivera coming back.  Frazier is interesting.

I've heard Canales mention that he wants a defense that can get Turnovers and be aggressive. Evero's defense is not that by design. It's a bend don't break that limits yardage but as we've seen this year and even last year, doesn't necessarily mean we're a good scoring defense. I want a more aggressive defense that teams fear. Our best defenses were FEARED. Aint nobody fearing an Evero defense

If Evero does end up leaving, I imagine that's the type of D Coord we'd get.

I wouldn't mind Rivera as a DC.  Wasn't a big HC fan but he's proven to be an elite DC.  I think he had the number 1 defense as a 3-4 with the Chargers and a number one defense with the Bears with a 4-3.  It wouldn't be a bad thing to have more head coaching experience on the roster too.  But I would also be surprised and if Canales wants more aggression I'm not sure Ron would be that pick.
