That was the thing with Shula. Once somebody figured out how to counter the offense he'd built around Newton, he couldn't answer back.

Ya gotta be able to play the chess game; move, counter move, set up move, anticipatory moves, etc.

Otherwise you end up obsolete.

I know some coaches have lots of assistants, others not as many...but it's a valid question.

Agree on the whole run game / pass game coordinator thing. Generally speaking they're just glorified OL / QB / WR or assistant whatever coaches.

I know some teams have used those titles as excuses to give raises to assistants they want to keep. Kinda like naming someone "Assistant Head Coach", I suppose (although those titles do usually come with additional duties).

I was looking at the Panthers staff listing.  I had no idea Dom Capers still worked for us.

If I recall correctly, the staff ballooned under Rhule. Don't think it reduced much under Reich, if at all.

Regaining Caldwell and Capers after Reich struck me funny. Haven't looked at the staff page in a while to see who was or wasn't still there.

I actually remember Caldwell when he coached Wake back in the 90's.  Everyone at the school said he was one of the most decent and honorable men you would ever want to know.  But he came from Penn State, and just never could adapt to coaching at a school like Wake.  

I do think its amusing that Capers ended up here.  While there was no internet forum back in those days, from what I remember, by the end of his tenure as HC, he was disliked almost as much as Rhule.

That will be Canales' challenge for himself going into the next season. We may have finished the season quite strong, but we did enough good things on tape for our opposition to look over and counter. 

To some extent, I do think Slowik was a bit of a scapegoat. There were injuries to the O-line and he kept losing receivers throughout the season. The not being to adjust bit is a rather common flaw with a lot of NFL staff. It's just a bit odd to let go of someone that quickly, though. Almost hints of something more to this story that we're not privy to.

I am a professor and we have a ton of committees.  I was new at an area university and was nominated to be a member of the "committee on committees."  It sounded easy and redundant--two things I look for in a committee (we have to serve on some as a condition of tenure).  I asked, "What does that committee do?"  Is it a committee that discusses why we have too many committees?  The answer, in the event you are interested:  A committee on committees in a college "matches the requests of faculty and staff members with available committee positions."  I did absolutely nothing on that committee.
