The great Joe Person: 4 Things I'm watching as Panthers prepare for important offseason

Yeah a lot of that is our horrible safety play. Horn has been solid IMO. Mike Jackson was targeted most games I watched.

He is, but he's also one of the leaders in pass breakups.

I wouldn't mind a younger option we bring in during the draft but depending on what he wants he isn't a bad #2. It isn't his fault that our scheme never lets Horn move so he's always vs the other teams #1...

There’s too many other issues not to keep the few promising defensive players that we do have. Jackson and Horn both need to be rewarded this offseason with contracts. We need major help (in order) at edge, interior DL, linebacker, and safety. Morgan needs to sign 3-4 high impact defensive free agents and go heavy defense in the draft, while also looking for more help at receiver and center. That’s where my focus would be.

It's nothing short of horrifying that it was written as if it's a foregone conclusion that all of the coaching staff decisions are Tepper's alone. If he keeps doing this we're going to keep losing.

Let Morgan be the GM. If he fails fire him and try again. Let Canales be the HC. If he fails fire him and try again. But stay the fug out of the football decisions behind that.

To paraphrase Dan Snyder 1.0, "Well what's the fun in that?"

I predict we hire Robert Saleh for DC and make him one of the higher paid coordinators in the league. Him and Canales have history together.

"Hi Robert, meet your defensive roster. What do you mean you've changed your mind?"

That's concerning.

What's also concerning is they're talking about Young like he's the nailed on starter next year. That's terrifying.

I mean, that's just where we are right now. With Bryce's improved play, what will be a better option for us? The only guy potentially available that I'd want is Cam Ward and he's highly unlikely to be there when we're on the board. If he was, is draft him and put Bryce on the auction block but it's highly unlikely.

Most likely, it's Bryce. Hopefully with a legit marginal starter/good backup type behind him to push him. I'd make him earn it in camp next year though. We got the best out of Bryce when we stopped coddling him and benched him and made him earn it.

A young(er) vet and/or a mid round pick depending on who drops.  One thing is for certain is the qb room has to be upgraded from Dalton.    I think at the end of the day Drew Lock will enter the equation.  Just makes too much sense.  Big mobile qb with a rocket arm that kindof fits the mold of geno smith.

His improved play simply isn't good enough. We're wasting another season running him out there as the starter.

I think we're probably wasting another season either way. I'm just not big on this QB draft class outside of Ward. We're probably looking at rolling with Bryce and hopefully a quality veteran backup. I don't see anyway around it other than selling the farm to try to trade up again. No thanks on that.

    • If there's a prospect who looks strong on the field but has the question marks, makes sense to bring them in and see if they are indeed a nutjob or not.  Especially if they couldn't get a good sense in limited time to meet him at the combine.  Randy Mueller has talked about it before -- many GMs don't just use these top-30s to validate the guys they already love.  Although we seem to do that and kind of show our cards a lot lol.   But to the point, if they love tape, have met enough coaches/teammates and talked to them at the bowls/workouts, many teams don't need to wine and dine and get to know them.   There's certain guys who get to know regional scouts, GMs and position coaches starting mid-college season last year.    On the flipside, there's the wildcards who aren't privy to developing relationships with the pro-community while in school, have bad reps, and teams need to dig a bit further into it.  A top-30 becomes a good measuring stick for those teams think could be a stellar fit but are unsure on who the guy actually is - which matters a ton at the end of the day.  Organizational fit has so much more weight than let on and is why these drafts after the first few picks get so all over the map.
