Canales still believes in Evero

1) Every free agent pickup this season is underperforming from their previous year.

2) The good players we had all elected to go elsewhere instead of staying with the Panthers (for the same or more money) when given the opportunity.

3) The team can't tackle to save their life - it has been a consistent thread throughout his time here.

That pretty much sums him up I think.

Dave was loyal to Bryce-when everyone wanted him gone.  I expected him to be loyal to Evero--and I expect Tepper to learn from it.

Frankly, it would be wrong to fire him after only drafting a LB and some day 3 players, losing Burns, Shaq, Brown, Gross Matos, D. Jackson, Chinn, Luvu--

No--the old way would be to fire Evero.  The Canales way will be to thank him for doing the job he did. 

Not going to deny for a second Evero was put in such an unenviable position from the start. He was basically asked to work with even less than last season, only to lose the few good pieces he had early. I suppose the question is what has our defense shown us this season that validates our loyalty to Evero? With Bryce, at least there can be arguments made using actual things he did on the field. Our defense... a few critical stops that led to wins? Our pass rush having some good spurts here and there? Trevin Wallace? If the whole point of Evero is that he can coach up even marginal players, have we've seen that out on the field? 

Again, I get it. If a much better team like the Lions can't coach their way out of fixing their now-depleted defense, then what chance do we have? The issue is whether whatever reasons we had in keeping Evero are still valid as of now. Also, from my recollection, it was Morgan that insisted on keeping Evero and his defensive staff. Given that Canales is an offensive coach, he might like working with Evero but if Morgan has soured on him, I feel Canales is going to defer to someone that likely is more qualified to judge his performance as a defensive coach.

We were really, really, really bad on defense.  I have seen plenty of defenses get decimated with injury and not be historically bad.  I don't think what occurred this season is excusable.

He’s very wrong ha. 34’s only work with a Haloti Ngata type DT. It’s impossible to have a passrush when you’re getting gashed for 9+ a carry. If he can’t evaluate that by the tape and adapt he’s not the guy. Send him back to Denver

Good points. The Lions went from averaging about ~19 points given up per game midway thru the year to more than 30 over the last 4 games. Some of that is the offenses they've faced (Bills, 49ers with Purdy, Green Bay), but still, the injuries are very clearly impacting their D... They have like 15 players from their D on IR, and now they're playing a buncha JAGs and below - just like us.

I'd say Evero's D has come up on some big possessions when games have been close. Where the D has been blown out, it is usually because the offense has really, really sputtered.  Until that final drive of the game, they'd held the Chiefs decently well. They contained TB the first time and PHI the week after; we win both those games if not for offensive miscues.

Overall I think Evero's defense this year wasn't as bad as the stats will indicate, but it ultimately may be bad enough to cost him his job... We'll see.

I think we put way too much stock in things people say in interviews that they gain nothing by saying and basically have no other answer they could even give right now regardless.

that was my first thought.  I also think there are times when the coach uses the media to speak to the team or the ownership or the coaches and not the public.  You have to ask, "Was the coach asked a direct question and did not want to answer it in a manner that would cause controversy?  Was the statement voluntary, and if so, why would he make a comment that is otherwise something that is assumed?   Context matters.\

You consider all variables to identify the central problem--and if the coach is the central problem, you have no choice.  Not to say that he is the ONLY problem. but if he is PART of the problem, you let him go.  What a difference a year makes--last year we were worried that he might get a head coaching gig.
