PFF: grading WR by ability to separate, YAC and catching the ball

It's hard to ignore how much more efficient the offense looked in Legette's absence.

As far as what the future holds for him and opinions on that go it boils down to either you believe he will put in the work or you don't.

But I don't blame anyone for being pessimistic given our history with WR's.

The offense was going up against maybe the worst linebacking group in the league. Turns out that’s not a recipe for success against an entire offense built around running the ball and five yard crossing routes.

Catching with your hands is like rebounding well: if it’s something you don’t do in college you generally don’t become a good one

??? he was plucking the ball out of the air like Randy Moss last year

Personal opinion but I think Canales moves XL around too much. He’s been pretty damn good when he’s operating as the X and just galloping down the field.

He seems to struggle a little more when playing the Y or Z. His route running and overall concept of NFL defenses doesn’t seem to quite be there when he’s playing off the LOS. His route running isn’t exactly graceful and you’ll sometimes see him carry his route too far specially against zone defense when he’s playing inside.

As an X he’s really good though, especially against cover 0.

Watching the Chiefs/Steelers game yesterday I couldn’t help but think that we should be using XL the way the Steelers use Pickens and they should be using Pickens the way we use XL.

That's valid. And to further dive into that the reality is beating up the Cardinals is no more a way to assess whether or not our offense is actually progressing than the definitive win we had against the Raiders earlier in the year. Furthermore the last time we blew out the Cardinals turned out to be a fluke too and coincidentally that game also featured running the ball heavily and was obviously not something that was sustainable.

All of the above is why it's best to take the approach of game by game see what you've got and go from there.

But next season when the games actually matter for playoff position there should be no more excuses. Plain and simple.

Yes, he was better than what he's showing on film this season, and it's also why people shouldn't be giving up on him. We need to figure out what works and keep on doing it. This would hopefully allow X to get intimately comfortable working within a pro system. Then he would quite naturally react better in situations that go off script in the game. Moreover, he needs to stay on the JUGS machine and work on his hands, concentrating on catching away from his body.

I mean, we had 149 passing yards…

Not sure that really highlights that much. XL is just a little raw and looks as such.  Which everyone should have expected that to show IMO,  I still like the dude.   I don’t think the playcalling has been great for him this season.

I agree I still think he has a high ceiling and he's given me no reason to question his work ethic. I expect him to be much better next season. That being said nothing is guaranteed.
