After Graham, next best Dline players

With the unexpected win Sunday, the guy I wanted may not be around. Mason Graham will probably be gone by the 7th pick. Who else is a stud in the early to mid first round (or 2nd round) to slot next to Brown. Possibly Grant or Walker would be up next. Hunter is not the answer to solve our run defense problems. Looking for Dline recommendations.

Opinions?

There are some good DTs (NT, 3 tech in this draft).  In my mocks, I take 2.  For that reason, I go edge in round 1.   WR you ask?  I look for those who run good routes and catch the ball cleanly.
If you had to choose right now, who would you keep on the roster--XL or Coker?  One was a first rounder, the other an UDFA.  So don't tell me there are no Wideouts to be found.  I can list 12 that would improve us...but you asked about DT--any of these in round 2 would be great---Grant (mich) Nolen (Ole Miss) Harmon (Ore), Williams (Ohio St), Walker (KY), Sanders (SC).  Sleeper?  Collins (Tex).   I love the DTs in this draft.

Edge?  ( I am discarding the Sam LB--holds the edge and plays run to pass--capable of moving down into the 3 tech--I think we have that on the roster in Wonnum, Johnson, Barno, etc.  I am looking for either a true pass rusher or a hybrid who can cover and rush from multiple positions--like Parsons from dallas)

After Carter, I really like jalen Walker from Georgia.I like Mike Green (Marshall) in round 2 or Jack Sawyer (Ohio State).  Sawyer is an excellent all around edge player with a great motor and bats down a lot of passes.  Finally, in round 2, I might take BC's Donnovan Ezeiruaku--he had 80 tackles at Boston College and 16.5 sacks.  who does that?  Princely Umanmelien (sp) from Ole Miss is highly rated, but I am not that high on him personally because I think he is a one-trick pony--sack artist.

In the third round, We could add another South Carolina edge--Kyle Kennard who is learning the position with success (11.5 sacks, 3 FF) but he is weak vs the run, imo.  In the third I'd rather have Bradyn Swinson from LSU who had over 50 tackles, 8.5 sacks.

If we do not get Carter, I would trade back and grab Mike Green or Jalen Walker and grab a DT or two in round 2.

if Carter is still there, he's gotta be the guy at this point. don't love him at 4, but at 7? sure, pull the trigger

no Carter? Mykell Williams from Georgia

2nd round, I'm looking more and Deone Walker than the edges. If he's there to provide a big body in the middle, D Brown (if back healthy) should eat

I'm also enamored with Landon Jackson, simply on measurables. Seems more a hand in the dirt, 43 end than a 34 edge, but maybe he slides in a 34 DE on passing downs. Similar feelings (despite the crazy measurables) on Jack Sawyer.

If we're focusing on pass rushers from more of a stand up position, I'm also looking at Donovan Ezeiruaku and Kyle Kennard

Then there's Dani Dennis-Sutton, Jared Ivey,I've, Mike Green and was watching Patrick Payton, but looks like he's headed to LSU instead of the draft

I have Abdul Carter, Mykel Williams, and then James Pearce ranked in that order.

Will Johnson is probably the best DB in the draft hands down.

It won’t fix our biggest issue but pairing Will Johnson with Jaycee horn is awfully tempting…

Sack totals are overrated--I look for tackles and a decent number of sacks--but crazy sack numbers are misleading.  You can have a game where you get 4 sacks because the backup OT in front of you turned his ankle and you are now facing a freshman a year out of high school.  Look at the per game stats and look for consistency---tackles 4-7 per game, sacks (half the teams they played or more), etc.

I am have mixed feelings about Carter and Graham. We need sacks, but our run defense is a total dumpster fire. So adding Graham to Brown would be a great run D.

if we stay in a 3-4, we also need a NT. A NT is the early rounds (1-2) usually doesn’t happen. So we draft Carter, we should be looking for a solid NT in 3rd. Maybe like Stackhouse from Georgia

so much depends on what you want to run as the base/ highest percentage front. if you want a 3 man front, then Grant has always been the guy IMO, and Walker from Kentucky is right there too. pick one, cause expectations for both are crazy come combine time. love to get both but unless walker flops in the interviews and underwear Olympics (where he is expected to really make the 2nd or 1st round grade come true). Why? Cause with Brown, its 3 unusually large lineman that move like UT/ large Ends but can disrupt even when double teamed. it also lets the guys behind them really get freed up. i think grant is probowl level 5-tech (which is rare) as he is so damn disruptive even when doubled and helped make graham.

there are a bunch of 5-techs this year to go get that can really help the run game and yet be respected as rushers or they will collapse a pocket. 5 tech thats interesting is Copehart from Clemson. not a stat monster, but great anchor and quick twitch guy. Rhylie Mills was another and he might be able to be a 5-tech or 3-tech, but want to see how that knee does. he was a team captain and productive as hell this year. Jordan Burch is another 5-tech to watch out for as well. good anchor and can still push the pocket out there. not gonna be a wiz beating the tackle often, but thats not the 5-tech's job. Sai'vion Jones is another that if he comes out, can develop into a great DE, but he may be able to play in either front, but prefer he develops a little more.

grant to me is more the 5 tech if you stay 3 man front than a nose in either system, but could see him at NT and brown at UT to make a nasty up the middle pair, but he isnt the pass rusher others are who we could pair with Brown in a 4 man front. walker might be able to stick in that nose and anchor well enough in either front. both are NOT guys i go get if i want to run a 4 man front with brown (who should be NT, even if he would be a grand UT). then its Nolen and Williams, sleeper is the kid Zane Durant, if he declares to pair with D Brown. get that quick disrupter up the middle to pair with brown, cause they will all have to still double brown inside where he is still a monster, but let the other terrorize the OG.

as for 4-3 edges, im not enamored with this class. lots of questions in lack of production from the freak athletes and over production for the ones that dont pop on so many plays like the top of the draft guys. carter with more production is a slam dunk, same with Williams from UGA.

DT is one of the best positions in this draft, maybe the best.  Problem is I'd rather get edge in the first if it's the right person, but I'll take Graham in a heartbeat.  He is a disrupter.  And our second round pick has fallen back a great deal since it was once flirting with a top 10.

But there is a ton of talent that will go in the first at DT.

After Graham, Ken Grant out of Michigan.  339 pounds with quick hands and feet

Deone Walker, Kentucky.  very athletic at 345 lbs

Shemar Stuart Texas AM, 6'6 290

Walter Nolen Ole Miss  305

Derrick Harmon   Oregon 310

Omar Norman-Lott   Tennessee  315

TJ Sanders   Scar  290  better rusher than run defender

it's too early in the draft process to really say, but they could all be gone before our second pick.

    • I think we are seeing one of the Panthers' greatest coaching seasons in our 30 year history.  Bryce was horrible--how he is approaching average. The defense was not really addressed in the offseason and we lost Burns, Gross Matos, Shaq Thompson, Derrick Brown, and Action Jackson from last year.  On offense, Canales benched Bryce after 2 games.  most of us thought he was done.  Teams offered conditional seventh rounders and the brain trust on the Huddle was shouting, "Do IT!!!"  Canales stayed with Bryce. On offense, we lost our starting center early, our #1 WR, our #2 WR (AT), our #3 WR (Mingo), and a former second rounder (TMJ).  For much of the year, we have had XL, Coker, and Moore at WR. This team was getting blown out early on--with wins against powerhouses Vegas, the NY Giants--then November happened.  A win vs the Saints, and heart-breaking losses vs. Tampa, Kansas City, and Philly--all playoff teams (probably).  This team has gone from a joke to being competitive.  A few players away from being relevant. I cannot think of a better coaching job--except maybe 2003.  And this team is likely to win 4-5 games. Think about it.  A rookie head coach with a positive attitude has done this in about 15 games.  I am sold.
    • Brother in case you didn't know, the new BY scale is being used here with this UDFA form another team..
