Scott Fowler on game, Young, Panthers. Not wrong

With QB Bryce Young (4 turnovers) in full regression, Panthers get pummeled by Cowboys

The Carolina Panthers reminded everybody exactly how bad they can be Sunday, regressing into a team that clears out its home stadium in the third quarter because its own fans can no longer stand to watch.

Favored to win for the first time in 34 games, the Panthers instead lost, 30-14, to the Dallas Cowboys

Quarterback Bryce Young, whose “Good Bryce, Bad Bryce” on-field persona has been well-established over the past two seasons, trotted out Bad Bryce for this one. Young committed a career-high four turnovers — losing two fumbles and throwing two interceptions.

The fumbles were the worst of the four turnovers, coming as they did to ruin a promising drive inside the red zone on Carolina’s very first possession and then on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter when Carolina was only trailing 10-7.

The whole vibe felt very much like last season, as Young was sacked a season-high six times and the wrapping-paper thin

Carolina defense allowed 211 yards rushing, 199 yards passing and three touchdown passes to backup Dallas quarterback Cooper Rush

The biggest part of it is just the ball security, right?” Panthers coach Dave Canales said. “Making sure that we end the down with the ball.”

Sounds simple, but the Panthers did it poorly. Young threw to the wrong guy on one of his interceptions — trying to force the ball to a well-covered Adam Thielen instead of a wide open Ja’Tavion Sanders — and then badly underthrew his other one. The fumbles were partly because Dallas was overwhelming the Panthers’ offensive line, but also because Young wasn’t being careful enough with the ball.

It’s the NFL,” Hunt said. “You got to come ready to play or get embarrassed. … Hopefully this week will humble us a little bit.”

***from me, love Hunt but that statement is laughable 3 and 10 buddy, 3 and 10 ***

You would think the Panthers were already pretty humble, given that they came into the game 3-10. And now, consider:

▪ Carolina has missed the playoffs for seven seasons in a row (in other words, in every year of owner David Tepper’s tenure).

▪ Tepper’s overall record as the Panthers owner is 34-79.

▪ Bryce Young’s overall record as an NFL starter is 4-21.

But after a month’s worth of looking like he might be the answer, Young mostly looked Sunday like the sort of quarterback who makes you question everything about the team. Canales did say afterward that Young will start again next week, as Carolina plays its final home game of the season against Arizona on Dec. 22.

“One game doesn’t define you,” Hubbard said in Young’s defense. “He’s played great over the last how many weeks? Mistakes are going to be made. I mean, it’s the NFL. It’s not easy.”

Definitely true. Especially when your quarterback turns the ball over four times.

The solution, considering that we will not be drafting Ward or Sanders, is to draft a player like Ewers or Allar or Milroe in round 2. Only Ewers might be ready to start in 2025 if necessary--the others are developmental)  My preference? wait until rounds 3 or even 4 and draft a guy with tools who need to be coached up--Beck could be damaged goods who could use time to sit and watch and learn--Rourke is my favorite bargain basement QB whose skills match what we are doing.  Finally, we need a veteran backup who might want a shot at the starting gig.  Justin Fields comes to mind.  I think they wanted a mentor for Bryce, not a competitor, which is why Dalton was brought in.  Screw that--everyone competes--nothing is promised.

I think Canales could do something with Fields.  If we had Fields, Young, and let's say Rourke on the roster, I would feel a bit better about the QB position.

Allar just announced that he’s going back to school

That class next year is going to be loaded

Manning, Nico, Nuss, Allar

I wouldn’t waste a pick on a QB and just see this through for another year

Ewers is most likely going back as well but he’s ass so don’t matter

Three of the four were walk off FGs by Pineiro.  None of the four wins by more than 3 points.

This is really the biggest thing. At minimal points has the offense seemed elevated due to him at QB. When things were great across the board, he looked OK, even good from all reports. When things are not great, he has not shown little if any ability to elevate and overcome that. That is not where an NFL team should want to hang their hat, and competition should absolutely remain on the table.

We've gotten embarrassed multiple times this season. How many times does it need to happen for something to finally click? Sounds like we need to shake some things up across the roster IMO beginning with the most consequential position.

PREACH!  Maybe someone else will be labeled "next year" guy.  Welcome to the club, lol!

This will humble us a little bit... WOW. This team really thought they'd arrived and was totally feeling themselves because they had a couple of competitive losses against good teams. I mean... oh my god LOLOLOLOL

This.

They needed a history lesson of outcomes against the Cowboys in the regular season, save for the thanksgiving beatdown.

Barring injury, they need to be immediate 4 year starters, and on this team, that's a pretty low bar to hurdle. I also really hated the FA strategy building up to the draft, particularly the guards, and the draft strategy itself. A strategy that focused on building around a QB that was so terrible he had no business being on the field. It was clear to pretty much everyone, BY wasn't ready to be an NFL starter. We dumped everything to build around him in the hopes he would become what we drafted him to be. And while the end of the year started showing some promise, we still don't know going into year 3 if he's going to live up to the hype. Dumping all your resources to build around a single player (and hope for the best) isn't as important as building a complete team.  If there's any certainty in drafting, it's HQ interior linemen are found in rounds 2-3, and even 4 pretty regularly. Dumping a ton of FA cash into those 2 spots didn't make sense when we have so many holes. Draft guards, pay tackles. It's one of the staple principles of oline building.  XL was always a project. He didn't have years of consistent high end performance in college. His hands are bricks, he body catches a lot, and he looks more like a 4th round receiver than a 1st. Maybe he improves, maybe not. He looked extremely raw as a rookie and we can only hope he might develop by the time his rookie contract expires. I'm always a fan of drafting guys that actually have hands coming out of college. Who cares if you can get open, or fight for the ball, when you can't actually come down with it consistently.  Then we get to Brooks. Taking a RB with a torn ACL who may or may not see the field in 24/25 over Zach Frasier, who already looks the vet at a position we've been severely deficient at since pre-injury Ryan Kalil. Relying on Corbett, coming off injury, to move from guard to center is never ideal, and the injury bug bit yet again, and we were scrambling trying to find someone to lead our 200m offensive line. And the worst part, we traded up to do it giving up 2 5ths to take Brooks when we're lacking talent everywhere.  Wallace, meh. Sanders looked good before that neck injury. But now we're into day 3 where expectations aren't extremely high for making the roster, unless it's the Panthers, but you can find some position players and rotational players to start plugging the Swiss cheese roster.  I give him credit for getting Coker as an UDFA and the trade for Jackson, but if that's the highlight of your draft, there's some serious problems with your drafting.  If we had saved the FA money spent on the guards, drafted JPJ and Frazier, and still been in pretty close to the same spot, better off cash wise (or spent on other FAs) going into FA this year. Coker ended up playing better than XL in less time. Brooks is Eric Shelton 2.0 right now. And we used 5 picks in the 1st 2 rounds, if you count those included in the trades. That's too much given up for a team that won 2 games the year prior. JMO, but I think the whole offseason strategy last year was flawed from start to finish.
    • Everything hinges on his ability to build through the draft so it's unknown until we see the upcoming draft class in action. That's all that will ultimately matter. We cannot afford anymore duds or projects especially in the early rounds.
