My point is that Cam never developed sufficiently as a passer in his career. He didn’t really overcome and iron-out the flaws in his mechanics, which is fine when you’ve got full arm strength and athleticism, but if one (or both) of those goes, then you’re in trouble. That’s before considering that he didn’t always consistently read the field well or go through his progressions, so the offense in Carolina was designed around his strengths and limited the need for him to make more complex reads. However, that side of his game was exposed in New England because their offense is more complex and asked him to do more of the things our offense’s never (or at least rarely) did.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Cam was one of the most physically gifted players to play in the NFL. However, he could have been an all time great had he managed to develop as a passer.

A great example to me is Lamar Jackson now.  His first 5 seasons his passing skills were similar to Cam and not seeing a great deal of development (mainly missing games the last 2 years).  His running carried him more often than passing - and typically limited his team's success.  But the last 2 years after he finally got healthy again you can see his passing has finally developed, and he has worked alot of those mechanical bugs out.  In terms of passing he still isn't an elite passer - but he is well above average which is why he is a repeat Pro Bowler and MVP candidate.  He is the clear MVP IMO this year.

It's a waste of time to engage with Stingray. He's made his feelings on Cam Newton extremely transparent already in the past. Any take he has regarding Cam should be disregarded because he plainly just doesn't like Newton which is his right to feel that way and have that personal opinion but he definitely confuses that with having credibility in assessing Cam as a player.

Anyone that can type the bolded below and be serious has absolutely no leg to stand on in these discussions. Go shitpost somewhere else.

I wouldnt say that Allen has a ton of weapons. He had Diggs (4 years). But we also had Smitty (3 years), Olsen, JStew, Williams and CMC.

 

I would also argue that our defense was better in general as well.

I stand by that 100% to this day and always will.  Nothing I have posted here is any different than that statement.  I have spoken to dozens and dozens and dozens of life-long Panther fans who completely agree with that.  Cam had a losing record as a starter in 8 of 11 seasons.  This is no different than current frustrations people on here have with the current program every year - some blame Bryce and some don't.  Why don't you go pull up all of my comments on Bryce and let me know if you still want to try and imply BS?  

Why are you guys so concerned with whether or not I like Cam?  Seriously what is your obsession?  My evaluation of him has nothing to do with emotion - my comments are objective every single time.  Maybe you can't compartmentalize like that but I can - and I do when I evaluate my opinions.  That bolded statement shows the combination of my subjective view and my objective evaluation perfectly.  And I gave you the stats to back it up.

Cam was amazing but I will always wish he was pushed as hard as Allen to improve on his passing. Allen took a beating and was forced to improve. Cam was coddled in that way until too late. That's on him a bit and the staff. The KB bs pick to go get it. The bad olines because he was power running game it into working. Just a waste of talent. He was so good even with all of that which will always leave me wondering what he would have looked like if they would have pushed him harder to improve his passing.

Not strictly true. Cam Newton had Steve Smith early in his career, five productive seasons with Greg Olsen, a couple of seasons with CMC, a couple of seasons from Benjamin, plus production from DeAngelo and J-Stew. Ok, he never had an elite receiver but he did have some good receiving options and a strong running game. That said, he would certainly have benefited from more weapons and a more consistent OL.

Has Josh Allen had more than him?

He had a couple of seasons with Stefon Diggs and Cole Beasley, but that was about it. It wasn’t until 2023 when he got  a thousand yard rusher in James Cook to support him. Outside of those, he’s had to throw to the likes of Gabriel Davis, Khalil Shakir, and tight ends Dawson Knox and Dalton Kincaid.

I don’t see significantly better weapons outside of Stefon Diggs. If anything they are fairly similar in terms of the offensive supporting cast.
