I mean we all know he's leaving.

Here are a few names I have been kicking around recently. Let me know your thoughts or anyone else that could be in the mix.

Seattle Connections:

  • Robert Saleh: Has history with Morgan/Canales in Seattle.
  • Marquand Manuel: Safeties coach for the Jets and former Panthers player. Also spent time in Seattle with Morgan and Canales.
  • Ken Norton Jr: Spent time with Morgan and Canales in Seattle. Currently the LBs coach in Washington. Was Seattle's coordinator from 2018-2021 and did a pretty bad job.
  • Andre Curtis: Safeties coach for Bears. Spent 7 years in Seattle.
  • Tommy Donatell: Washington's DBs coach; spent time in Seattle. Previously worked for Staley in LA.
  • Aaron Curry: Former player. Worked in Seattle from 19-22. Currently the LBs coach for the Steelers which are 6th in total defense. Also an NC native and Wake Forest Grad.
  • Clint Hurtt: Current DL coach for the Eagles. Spent 6 years in Seattle and was the DC in 2022-2023.

Buffalo Connections:

  • Leslie Frazier: Spent time in Buffalo with Morgan. Currently AHC in Seattle. But word from Seattle fans is they are expecting to lose him if he gets another DC offer.

Tampa Bay Connections:

  • Kacy Rodgers: Tampa's Defense is struggling this year but the run D is ranked 10th and getting better each week. Rodgers has followed Bowels most of his career. He is currently the DL Coach/Run Game Coordinator and knows most of the offensive staff.

Other Candidates:

  • Matt Eberflus: No real history with Morgan or Canales but would be a good project for him to redeem himself. Was a good coordinator in Indianapolis before taking the Bears HC job.
  • Brendan Daly: Chiefs LB Coach, been with KC for 6 years. Would have a connection with Tillis. Spent a lot of time in New England with Belichick. However, he doesn't seem to be very popular with Chief fans.
  • Joe Cullen: Defensive Line coach for KC. Would also have a connection with Tillis. KC's defense is 3rd against the run.
  • Patrick Graham: DC for the Raiders since 2022. His stock has went down the last few years but at one time was a HC candidate. Pierce isn't fired yet but it seems inevitable.
  • Jim Schwartz: Very experienced coordinator who is currently with the Browns. Also was DC for the Eagles and HC for the Lions. Should Stefanski get the boot, he could be job searching.
  • Ryan Slowik: Bobby Slowik's brother. Currently the DBs coach and Pass Game Specialist for the Dolphins. Has a reputation for shutting down the pass and creative pass rush schemes.

Unlikely...but eh maybe:

  • Pete Carroll: Very unlikely, but he is Dave's mentor and his son (Nate Carroll) is the Passing Game Coordinator for us.
  • Lovie Smith: Retired; but definitely an experienced HC and DC.
  • Dennis Allen: Former Saints DC and HC. I think Allen would quit football before he came here but a reunion with Payton wouldn't be at DC since Vance Joseph has been doing such a stellar job.
  • Mike Vrabel: Will probably have his hand in one of the many HC openings. Interviewed for HC last season. Was rumored then he has friends in the front office. Currently an assistant with the Browns.
  • Steve Wilks: No need to explain his background. Was the scapegoat in San Francisco last year. People here have mixed feelings on him. Right now, he is serving as a volunteer advisor for UNC-Charlotte.

My guess is Tepper will want a big name, Canales will want somebody he knows, and Morgan will want somebody gritty. Saleh is the only one that matches all 3. I don't see him coming here though, I think he will go back to SF or land somewhere like LAR when/if they can their guy.

Great post with some great info! I would love Saleh but realize from what you said that it probably won't happen unfortunately.

You can also add Sean Desai to the list. He only overlapped with Canales one season in Seattle (2022). He was the Bears DC in 2021 and Eagles in 2023. Despite having the 10th ranked Defense in Philly last year, he was fired and replaced with Fangio. He's currently a Senior Assistant/Advisor for the Rams.

I think landing a big fish as the defensive coordinator is highly unlikely. Based off the list provided we will probably have to get one of the blue chip names and see what happens.

If I had to make a guess I would say Aaron Curry. The man is a linebacker and so was Dan Morgan. The connection is there with Seattle, and I would look towards his experience with a winning franchise like Pittsburgh now.

Likely going to end up being a lesser name and at this point it does not matter all that much.

Regardless people should go ahead and reconcile with the fact we're likely to see some of the same issues next season. Getting Derrick Brown back will obviously be huge but there are still many many needs for this defense and we can only do so much in a single offseason especially consider the offense is still floundering.

I love the candidate list, but we have to infest some draft capital and $ on that side of the ball if we want to be successful.

Hindsight is obvious, but if were just going to let teams motion and shift away from Jaycee, yes, half the field is eliminated, but if they don't need that half, it doesn't really matter.

Also, losing Derrick Brown is killing us. If teams are willing to stick to the running game, we can't stop them.

My top 3 are:

  • Robert Saleh
  • Lovie Smith
  • Leslie Frazier

However realistically I think the Top 3 are:

  • Ken Norton Jr.
  • Aaron Curry
  • Kacy Rodgers

Norton did a better job than Clint Hurtt in his time as DC in Seattle. He at least had a Top 10 unit a few times. Curry is a promising candidate and has a lot of upside. I think Kacy Rodgers is underestimated as well. He has developed a lot of young players and the one spot on Tampa's D that hasn't fallen backwards is their DL/Run D.
