Using Horn to trail a teams best WR

Recommended Posts

So this is bouncing around a lot.

for the record, I don’t understand why he doesn’t at least switch sides of the field. I do think Mike Jackson is a pretty good player, as evidenced by the play he made against lamb in the corner of the end zone.

it may be one of those situations where the player thinks he’s better than the coaches do.

Or it might be a situation where the entire scheme is based around him taking away one side of the field. For years under Fox the front seven play was based around the assumption teams would doubling peppers. it wasn’t about getting him production, it was about making the game 10 v 9

Playing Horn in the slot is completely nonsense. The guy is healthy for the first time in his career, and he is a competitor who will go into every tackle. It’s one of the reasons he’s so good, but it also puts him into a situstion where he’s going to get himself hurt.

if you’re an offensive coordinator and you see horn follow a wr into the slot, where are you running immediately? Do you want horn to be staring down a pulling guard?

additionally, horns in the slot, who’s that third corner? Is Jackson going to follow their 2? How many players are you having switch the field pre snap?

So yeah I get the appeal of “their best guy our best guy GONNA SETTLE THIS IN THE RING AT SUMMER SLAM” but at the end of the day i don’t really think it holds water.

Is the other team's best receiver suddenly not their best receiver if he lines up in the slot? This is how the Giants nearly came back from a huge deficit against us in 2015. They put OBJ in the slot to get him away from Josh Norman and then he started just lighting us up because our defensive scheme just flat out didn't allow for Norman to play in the slot.

He still is sure, but if I’m an OC I’m just going to make him play the run game until he gets hurt.

the 2015 team could also score points, so the giants needed to still focus on scoring. This 2024 team, well…

Horn isn’t feared around the league to the extent to demand that type BS gameplan.

And if he's not there then you're going to happily target your best receiver against the other team's third best CB. Which is the whole point of situationally putting your best WR in the slot.
