Is Coker WR1?

Him coming along is why I don’t really want to use our first on WR like others do. Mid rounder sure, need to prepare for life after AT.

Well, imagine a guy like McMillian being our Mike Evans while Coker is our #2.

That's potentially the best WR corps we will have had for a long time.

We need to have this conversation. So far I think Coker looks like the first rounder not XL. If Coker had gotten the same reps since start of the year he probably leads the team in yards and receptions. Hopefully XL can get back to his best form but right now he’s not the main WR to build around.

btw

Jalen Coker now holds the record for most receiving yards for an undrafted rookie in Panthers history. Coker entered Sunday needing 34 yards to pass Corey “Philly” Brown, who had 296 yards in 2014.

Coker’s line vs. Cowboys: 4 recs, 110 yards, 1 TD.

also

Jalen Coker’s top speed on his TD catch & run: 21.15 MPH

That’s the fastest ballcarrier speed by a Panther since DJ Moore in 2021

I honestly did not think he had wheels like that. Obviously great that he's showing potential, but also a positive sign that we actually identified such a guy and got him here in the first place without even using a draft pick.

Yet we cut him and he had to clear waivers to resign him. I think we mostly got lucky

If we were smart, re-sign him in the offseason to a 3-year extension.  Coker is only signed through next season.  If he balls out next year, he's only going to be that much more expensive.  An extension in the spring should be VERY team friendly.

Extend him in the off season and go after higgins

Can't extend a UDFA until after their second season.

Coker will be a good starting WR. Need a consistent playmaker, but that's a luxury pick. Need a productive offense first.

Coker & XL will make a good starting duo. Need a consistent QB who makes his team better, has the clutch gene, and doesn't need a perfect offense to look good.

good stuff, NAS.  Some of us were fans of his before the draft--I was disappointed that we did not take him in the sixth or seventh rounds--we got a break.  Imagine where we'd be without him?

He has solid hands, runs good routes, and has a mature understanding of the game.  Now we know that he has speed.  Hmmmm.

XL and Coker could make for a decent pair of WRs in a few years, but they will never both be good enough to be a Top 2 WR pairing on a contending team.

And if those are your top 2 WRs going into next season, that's one of the 5 worst WR rooms in the NFL, no doubt about it.

This is NOT a T-Mac post, it's just a general and accurate statement about our WR room at the moment.

He is an ERFA now as he was cut and resigned. They can make a qualifying offer.

Which changes nothing about Carolina's inability to extend this season as was suggested and makes that window actually even longer than 2 years.

We still don't know what we have in Coker. He played well today and has shown flashes this season in limited time. Looks like a ball player, but how will he perform when he starts getting different coverages? Is he an X? Is he a slot? Can he learn all 3 spots? There's a lot of unknowns there.

XL is young as well. We poo on him here because of his drops, sure, but the kid COULD develop. Give him time.

Coker is our most exciting receiver by far, but Philly Brown was exciting too. Where is he now? At home after doing nothing after his time here ended.
