Has this game changed feelings about Young?

honestly not really. He had a bad day but the entire team did tbh. O line had by far their worst game of the season.

I said in the last Bryce thread: it still remains TBD if he is a franchise guy, a good but not great starter or not the longterm answer.

Can't make that call after one week

Not really. I like Canales as a head coach but we need better play calling with better weapons. Every other game I see i just see quick hit throws that get good chunck RAC. And I just wonder why can't we have nice things

Here's the thing that bothered me about Canales play calling that bothered me. Olsen said it several times during the game. Why wasn't he calling play action more. Having Young in shotgun wasn't helping our running game and gave the defense time to tee off on Young.

I like Canales but play action needs to be more prevalent in our offense.

He needs to get his own DC in there plus relinquish play calling stick to being the head coach

We ran a ton with Dalton if you remember. Canales' offense is actually built around play action. Dave didn't run it more because it takes longer to develop and the pass rushers get there before throwing lanes can develop for Bryce to see. You can see this everytime he gets pressured he sprints out of the pocket to reset rather than stepping into it or resetting- not only is he being chased, his view is more obstructed than somebody like Dalton, Darnold, Cam, etc. PJ Walker used to do this too.

Every game that Bryce falters is another game that people will use to write the bust tag under his name.

Did Bryce have bad game?  Oh yeah, what a turd of a game.  He cannot put the ball on the ground that many times.  Did Bryce have a few good throws?  Yes he did, but the game got out of hand pretty quickly because of the turnovers, poor coverage of CeeDee Lamb, and poor run defense.

This game was a showcase of our lack of talent.  Even our vaunted OL got outmatched.  Mike Zimmer "got" Bryce.  We showed exactly why we are a 3-11 team heading for a top five pick.  We just have such a narrow margin of error being as bad as we are.

Do does that mean we should grab another QB?  Or pick the best player.  If Travis Hunter is there at 3, do you take a chance on a project QB like Cam Ward (decision making) or Sanders (ego/maturity)?  Both have more physical upside than Bryce, but both need time on the bench to learn how to play in the NFL.  To me, there's not a clear cut improvement from Bryce Young in the draft, and in FA, it's just going to be another band aid.  We don't have enough talent in other areas to give a veteran QB a chance to really shine.

So Canales is going to have to learn from this turd of a game, and Morgan is going to have to work on addressing these deficiencies.

Young is 4-23 as a starter.  He looks like a child playing a mans game.  He doesnt have the physical traits to be a nfl qb.  At some point its time to look in the mirror and admit this experiment has failed.

We just spent the past 3ish weeks of folks screaming "STAT WATCHER" when its patently clear Young cannot win in the nfl.  His wobbly duck throws, his lack of zip into windows, his sky high sideline passes, his crappy mechanics......all of that poo is too much to overcome.  Pull the plug and move on.

Opinions are like feet, we all have a couple, and everyone thinks mine stink.

I understand you don't like Bryce Young.  I'm Bryce-hopeful.  I also realize he's an outlier physically, but it wouldn't matter if Bryce was prophetically sized or Anthony Richardson sized.  I mean, in a similar number of games, AR has three times the number of fumbles that Bryce has.

You looked at the three games prior to Sunday, and you say "stat watcher."  I didn't see that.  I saw Bryce making plays, looking more confident, and leading his team.  No, he wasn't perfect, he made mistakes, and bad throws.  When the game was on the line, he stepped up and made some great plays.  In two games, he lead us to leads before being let down by the defense.  Against the Eagles, he threw a great ball to XL that was dropped.  I'm not going to change your mind that Bryce is not good enough to play in the NFL.  But I will say that he's showed some real potential as an anticipatory passer.

As far as pulling the plug, I was in favor of that early in the season.  He looked just horrific weeks 1-2.  Andy was playing well.  But since he's come back, Bryce has looked so much better.  We gave up the farm for that pick.  Right or wrong, we need to ride it out.  The team sucks.  Put another young QB on a crappy team, see what happens.  Regardless of what we do with the Qb position in the future, we need more talent across the board.

sure everyone has an opinion but at some point the facts simply add up.  Bryce has 1 game in his career over 300 yards (312).  He has a total of 8 games over 200 yards.  8 games of 27.  He has record of 4-23 as a starter.  I mean thats where he is, at some point the excuses just run out.   Hes got next year but you can be damn sure canales and co are bringing in some competition.

Not without competition

I'm old enough to remember the Joe Montana/Steve Young competition from the late 80's. Montana had a 3 year run from 85-87 where the 49ers didn't reach the NFC title game. They were thumped by the Giants in back to back years (85-86). The 2nd game resulted in a back injury that almost ended his career. People thought it may be time to move on from him (which is laughable in hindsight).

Bill Walsh brought in Steve Young that off-season. In 87, Montana had arguable the worst playoff game of his career and the the 49ers were upset at home by an unheralded Vikings team. In 88' there was a legitimate competition between him and Young. We know how that turned out. The 49ers repeated in 88-89, and almost pulled off a 3 peat in 1990. Young eventually got the job after Montana was hurt at the end of the 1990 season and missed pretty much all of the 1991 and 1992 seasons.

To this day its obvious that there is still some friction between Montana and Young. But, you can't deny that competition made them BOTH BETTER. Montana was playing the best football of his career before he got hurt in the 1990 NFC title game. Young took over and played at a HOF level for the rest of his career. IF the 49ers brought in competition for JOE MONTANA, then the Panther should bring in competition for Bryce Young.

I'm fine w/ Canales' top down rah rah leadership.

I think Canales being our OC is a problem.  Especially for a young QB.  Go get a legit OC.   Pairing a QB that needs to grow with a play caller that needs to grow is pointless bad math.   And that's if Canales was just the OC.  But he also is learning how to be a HC on top of still trying to develop himself as a good playcaller.

The design of how Carolina goes about stuff is always off.

    • ’a few paragraphs from Scott below With QB Bryce Young (4 turnovers) in full regression, Panthers get pummeled by Cowboys BY SCOTT FOWLER [email protected] 4hrs ago The Carolina Panthers reminded everybody exactly how bad they can be Sunday, regressing into a team that clears out its home stadium in the third quarter because its own fans can no longer stand to watch. Favored to win for the first time in 34 games, the Panthers instead lost, 30-14, to the Dallas Cowboys  Quarterback Bryce Young, whose “Good Bryce, Bad Bryce” on-field persona has been well-established over the past two seasons, trotted out Bad Bryce for this one. Young committed a career-high four turnovers — losing two fumbles and throwing two interceptions. The fumbles were the worst of the four turnovers, coming as they did to ruin a promising drive inside the red zone on Carolina’s very first possession and then on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter when Carolina was only trailing 10-7. The whole vibe felt very much like last season, as Young was sacked a season-high six times and the wrapping-paper thin Carolina defense allowed 211 yards rushing, 199 yards passing and three touchdown passes to backup Dallas quarterback Cooper Rush   The biggest part of it is just the ball security, right?” Panthers coach Dave Canales said. “Making sure that we end the down with the ball.” Sounds simple, but the Panthers did it poorly. Young threw to the wrong guy on one of his interceptions — trying to force the ball to a well-covered Adam Thielen instead of a wide open Ja’Tavion Sanders — and then badly underthrew his other one. The fumbles were partly because Dallas was overwhelming the Panthers’ offensive line, but also because Young wasn’t being careful enough with the ball.   It’s the NFL,” Hunt said. “You got to come ready to play or get embarrassed. … Hopefully this week will humble us a little bit.” ***from me, love Hunt but that statement is laughable 3 and 10 buddy, 3 and 10 *** You would think the Panthers were already pretty humble, given that they came into the game 3-10. And now, consider: ▪ Carolina has missed the playoffs for seven seasons in a row (in other words, in every year of owner David Tepper’s tenure). ▪ Tepper’s overall record as the Panthers owner is 34-79. ▪ Bryce Young’s overall record as an NFL starter is 4-21. But after a month’s worth of looking like he might be the answer, Young mostly looked Sunday like the sort of quarterback who makes you question everything about the team. Canales did say afterward that Young will start again next week, as Carolina plays its final home game of the season against Arizona on Dec. 22. “One game doesn’t define you,” Hubbard said in Young’s defense. “He’s played great over the last how many weeks? Mistakes are going to be made. I mean, it’s the NFL. It’s not easy.” Definitely true. Especially when your quarterback turns the ball over four times.
    • lol talking about Joe Montana and Steve young in a Bryce thread  only competition Bryce needs to worry about is the shift leader at chipotle who can reach all the ingredients
