Not sure about Abdul Carter just yet...

They can't afford to wiff on defensive players in the draft. No more Brown and Burns types around here. We need a Bosa or Hutchinson type maulers. No more ballerinas.

Those guys don't appear to be present in this draft, on paper.

Frankly, at this rate just give me someone that is an good, long term starter if we go defense.

I just have a lot of concerns about Carter. He doesn't really impress me any more than some of the other pass rushing options available, which I largely think are limited ceiling guys. Not bad players but I don't see anyone that looks like a high probability of being an elite pass rusher.

Given that this draft is short on elite talent, if I could guarantee Carter being a 8-10 year Mike Rucker level production guy, sign me up.

Was looking at what players are getting mocked to us at the moment, and the most common one is Abdul Carter from Penn State. I know we still got 4 more games to determine where we actually draft, but doesn't hurt to get a jump on the top players.

Now to preface this, I read reports that the reason why he hasn't played edge until this season is because he and his father were both ADAMANT from day 1 that he was a stand up linebacker, no if's or buts about it.

So, what made him change his mind finally this season? Here's his answer:

Now, I know most people will probably say "gotta get that money, can't blame a guy for that", and I agree to an extent, but after watching a few interviews and his tape, he seems to be solely motivated by money, and if he was real about football and the craft of it, then he would've been team-first and been an edge this whole time imho. When he talks about football in other interviews, he is terrible at breaking down the game or his play at press conferences. He's so raw he could be turned into sashimi by the time he gets on the field.

I'm getting major Isaiah Simmons bust-vibes from him. But like I said, it's super early, but just wanted to see your thoughts on a player like this and that kinda mentality and headspace.

I don’t feel he has enough pass rush moves nor enough quickness to react and always  tackle nfl caliber athletes in open space, and we saw how that capped out with a similar style in Brian Burns barely eclipsing 10 sacks if he’s lucky. But if we want to continue recruiting homegrown talent, I watched just as much of James Pearce Jr.’s tape, coming away very impressed. He plays stronger than he’s listed with a capability to keep the tackles from locking him up with his wingspan and strength, and then can shift into a ridiculously fast first step in another direction getting by in no time. And those are plays where he’s playing both the run and pass possibilities. On passing downs I’ve seen insane plays of him jumping the snap just as fast as the highlights of Abdul Carter, and this included a multi-sack game against Alabama against high caliber talent. Even though he needs to put on some mass, he low key looked a lot tougher against the run than Abdul Carter as well. I think he’s like 20 going on 21 too? Trade back a few spots if one of the top QBs are on the board and draft James. Then use the extra pick to draft dt help in addition to another edge/secondary help or dt mauler with the pick you got from the rams. Let’s make this defense scurrry again

Damn I actually like Carter and think he's one of the top 3 or so prospects in the draft. High energy player with great instincts who's super versatile and plays whistle to whistle. The ability to drop an edge back into coverage is really huge, allowing us to be creative or disguise. I don't know, I'd personally be very happy with that sort of talent if we were in the position to take him somehow.

I like his versatility, but with that comes some liability in run defense if we ever switch to a 4-3 defense.

I don't think he can be a full-time 4-3 EDGE; we'd likely have to use him as a rush OLB like Khalil Mack early in his career with the Raiders. Which can work; Carter can play off-ball linebacker at a high level as well and offers versatility, but that still would leave us with a hole at DE.
