the wr position has been a problem for a while now, hell it might be the worst position ever. Have we had a true 1 outside of smitty in almost 30 years?

I’ll further this in that the org basically lucked their way in to 89. They drafted him to be a returner with WR potential. In no way did they think this is going to be the best #1 receiver to ever play for this team.

I watch any other team in the NFL and I'm just flabbergasted just how wide open their receivers look compared to ours. In fact, the only time in recent memory when it wasn't like this was when we had Joe Brady as our OC.

Canales can get guys open at times but it's more Bryce being aggressive via throwing into windows earlier than a lot of QBs in this league. There's benefits to this such as defenders having less time to react to bat it down or pick it off but also drawbacks in that our guys has less time to get ready to catch the ball. Possibly why drops is an issue.

Cam had an absolute rocket launcher for an arm and guys like that tend to just see an opening and believe they can just rifle the ball there fast enough. Delhomme was similar in that vein. Cam was trying to work with his accuracy later in his career and there were improvements although his shoulder injury ultimately derailed his efforts.

yeah... I was frustrated with Cam cause it seemed like early years he didnt really improve his throwing.

The year he got hurt was the best I had seen him throwing.. till he didnt.

This

Bryce is constantly throwing to guys with little to no separation which would classify as a tight window

Combine this with all the other grades and what not from the receivers and it’s impressive what Young has been doing the last month

The big time throws, the lack of interceptions, tight windows, pushing ball downfield etc

The desperately need to address the WR room

It's just so easy to try and dump on the receivers...just saying.  I kinda reject the notion that our receivers aren't getting open. This ain't college. I'd bet that once it's all said and done, our guys are above average getting "NFL open."

Other people are seeing something different right now. Now I'm not saying that everyone uses the same metrics, but suffice it to say that we have guys who can get open. Bryce has just had a renaissance. He's playing more confidently. No need to do mental gymnastics to explain away his newfound aggressiveness.

And it pretty much goes without saying that Thielen gets open also.

I'm too cheap to pay for PFF, and to lazy to try and find something on Coker and Sanders.

I just don’t know what we’re supposed to do with a metric that is apparently so subjective that it produces two completely contradictory Top 8 rankings lists lol. These lists measure the same stat, but there’s zero overlap between them…8 unique receivers in each.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Legette and/or Thielen are doing well with separation, but what you just posted seems pretty unreliable.

Sanders is leading NFL next gen stats separation metrics right now.

Fair enough. I will point out that some measure the exact thing, and some are a measure against press coverage (which of course are in the same family).

I just pointed it out because it's been kinda in vogue for some Huddlers (not talking about you) to keep repeating the now-stale argument that nobody's getting open. NFL-open is much different than college open.

Here is another metric put out by PFF. Look at the average receiver cushion and separation. Ja'Tavion Sanders and Xavier Legette are right in there with everyone else.

https://nextgenstats.nfl.com/stats/receiving#average-separation

Perhaps Bryce is just getting more comfortable and confident (which should be credible), and as such his willingness to throw the rock into small windows is increasing also.

PFF does have our receiving score dead last in the NFL though

Yeah, but dead last in what? And what is that based upon? And when was the ranking released?

You see, I'm simply too cheap to pay for their (anyone's) premium stats. So I don't know the details. That being said, I will say this: PFF has some interesting metrics and stats, but I am skeptical that they base all of their rankings---especially the lists that they publish during the offseason---solely upon their metrics. I suspect that some subjectivity makes its way into their rankings. Moreover, they have various things they look at. For example one receiver may be the best against the press, or another may be best on curl routes, or slant routes, or jump balls, etc. One receiver might be a beast in the slot on a slant, and another might be a boss on fly routes. It's difficult to say that Ja'Marr Chase is better than Justin Jefferson if you get what I'm saying.

All I'm saying is that people need to stop assuming that our receivers aren't getting open. This isn't last year's receiving corps.

I do agree on getting open. Getting open isn't all there is to receiving tho.  Moore and XL are not catching the balls they should. XL is still learning depth of routes in the red zone. It's why we do move the ball well but have some red zone issues still.

Honestly tho this is a much better group than last year - with imo much better coaching.

And Sanders and Coker are to me very promising from a young player perspective. XL too, but he's a bit more raw seeming.

Don't take this as bashing Cam but I appreciate that BY can hit guys in stride.

Cam was the best QB we ever had... but his accuracy and touch let a lot to be desired.

That’s one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen. Cam was actually good at that, hitting guys in stride with good accuracy (his touch wasn’t a strength but the other two things were) while Bryce is mostly really bad at hitting guys in stride, mid at accuracy and good with touch. He’s often throwing to where guys are is read of where they will be, forcing them to stop or alter their momentum and catch behind them, leading to a lot of the missed throws that people are calling drops. I’m not trying to bash Bryce here, he’s made incredible progress (especially in accuracy), but accuracy still had a ways to go and hitting guys in stride is still a weaknesses.

You know. It's possible to compliment Bryce Young without going out of your way to denigrate our only MVP in franchise history and one of only two long term starting QB's in about 30 years unprompted.

Man I have been looking for you. So glad YOU were right and I was wrong about Bryce. When watching him play the last couple of games I have been impressed. I can see the light coming on. I got on you, a little bit,  about still having faith in BY. I don’t remember what the post was about. I just knew I was tired of losing and I felt I took it out on you for keeping the faith. I just wanted to apologize for my bitterness in my post.
