I was wrong about CMC

I didnt realize he does not want to be a WR. I guess that explains it then

It was buried in someone's article while he was still here. He could have changed his mind since then of course.

I read that running backs are almost twice as likely to go to IR as any other position.  That is a lot of wear and tear and probably why they don't last as long as some other positions.  While he could come back next year and play well, this is his 8th year, and that seems go be when rb's start to fade.   And some (Earl Campbell for example) don't make it that long.

Glad he got to play in a SB before he is finished.

He had 339 touches last year and 329 touches in 2022.

He also came out of college with a record number of touches.

He's simply got a ton of miles on him and he'll be 29 next summer. Eventually it all adds up and that wall is there waiting for every RB.

All things I used against signing him to that completely insane extension and reasons why we actually did "win" that trade. The fact we squandered all the resources notwithstanding.

Amazing player at a position of limited value in the NFL and with some of the shortest careers.

Not to mention that his recent injuries are both overuse and overtraining related. He has been very hard on his body on top of that mileage.

Something has to give and it largely ended up being his longevity.

Not much impact in Carolina because we were on a downswing. When he started for SF they were 27-10 including a SB and NFC Championship appearance. When he didn’t start, they are 7-9.

I won’t disagree on the second contract but like Barkley after he got hurt, I wouldn’t be surprised if CMC has a solid year next year. 300-400+ touches a couple years in a row is typically not good for the following season.

People are jerking off over Saquon but he has been banged up too. He has missed 22.5% of the total games he could have played(to date). CMC will be at 28% by the end of the season(assuming SF doesn't make the playoffs). That isn't too far off.

Derrick Henry has missed a total of 8.3% of his total games in his career.

There's no way Barkley has a repeat of this year. RBs with a year like this usually follow it with a lot of missing time the next

    • My response was to your comment specifically about two of the three QBs referenced. You said they were "just ball distributors." They were not. You then said in Y2 they were... They still were not. Brady won a Superbowl and Manning was considered a generational talent.  We don't need to compare BY to these guys. As to Brock Purdy, he's had a great 2.5 seasons in one of the NFLs best offenses. And still, that offense has been better with him than any backup as well as any QB before him. It'll be interesting to see how the 9ers handle him.  If your point is that the greatest of all time aren't the greatest of all time in their first couple seasons, you can just say that without denigrating some of the best QBs to ever play...
    • I think XL is going to be just fine. His mistakes have stuck out a lot more because they've been in clutch situations. If a few plays go a different way he's at least over 500 yds receiving and 5 TDs, that's not bad at all for a rookie.
    • Look at our WR situation from the other side. Who are you going to put your better CBs on?  Johnson and Theilen went out early---XL had 138 yards in the first three games on 12 catches.  Yardage-wise, that is over 30% of his total for the season.  12 catches is nearly 30% of his catches for the season. When these players went out--Johnson, AT, Mingo, etc.  it left XL facing the best corners of the opposition for many games.  He is raw--we knew that when we drafted him.  You can't throw a raw WR at the best CBs in the NFL and expect instant success.  If he spent the season facing the second or even third best CBs on each team, he'd probably have better stats.  Legette is still thinking out there, in my view. When the light comes on, he will be good. ------------------------------------------------ Hearing that there is noise to play Velus Jones over the next two games.  We will see if they do.
