What does the rule say now?  Isn’t  there something about control but the ball can move? Idk someone edumicate me plz.

Quote

COMPLETED OR INTERCEPTED PASS

A player who makes a catch may advance the ball. A forward pass is complete (by the offense) or intercepted (by the defense) in the field of play, at the sideline, or in the end zone if a player, who is inbounds:

a. secures control of the ball in his hands or arms prior to the ball touching the ground; and

b. touches the ground inbounds with both feet or with any part of his body other than his hands; and

c. after (a) and (b) have been fulfilled, performs any act common to the game (e.g., tuck the ball away, extend it forward, take an additional step, turn upfield, or avoid or ward off an opponent), or he maintains control of the ball long enough to do so.

Notes:

Movement of the ball does not automatically result in loss of control.
If a player, who satisfied (a) and (b), but has not satisfied (c), contacts the ground and loses control of the ball, it is an incomplete pass if the ball hits the ground before he regains control, or if he regains control out of bounds
A receiver is considered a player in a defenseless posture (See 12-2-7) throughout the entire process of the catch and until the player is capable of avoiding or warding off the impending contact of an opponent.
If a pass is caught simultaneously by two eligible opponents, and both players retain it, the ball belongs to the passers. It is not a simultaneous catch if a player gains control first and an opponent subsequently gains joint control. If the ball is muffed after simultaneous touching by two such players, all the players of the passing team become eligible to catch the loose ball.
If a player, who is in possession of the ball, is held up and carried out of bounds by an opponent before both feet or any part of his body other than his hands touches the ground inbounds, it is a completed or intercepted pass. It is not necessary for the player to maintain control of the ball when he lands out of bounds.
ARTICLE 4. INCOMPLETE PASS
Any forward pass (legal or illegal) is incomplete and the ball is dead immediately if the pass strikes the ground or goes out of bounds. An incomplete pass is a loss of down, and the ball returns to the previous spot.

Note: If there is any question whether a forward pass is complete, intercepted, or incomplete, it is to be ruled incomplete.

so basically it's still a bit subjective. refs interpret it. don't expect that to be done fairly or consistently.

I think Mr Scott was just referring to Thielen being a veteran presence who doesn't have super speed, but knows how to get open and makes the clutch catches, and not so much to the skill levels of the individual players.

And Proehl had two really good receivers beside him (Steve Smith and Moose).  Thielen is going to get more targets because the rest of the receiving group isn't at that level.

Pretty much, thanks

    • It’s concerning. Today I am going to write off and just say it was mental cause he got popped in the first quarter. Let’s hope he shows that early season improvement we saw earlier to close out the season. Spend all off season with the jugs and go get TMac to complement XL
    • Lost but won  I REPEAT: All that matters is that Bryce plays well Legette catches that ball there’s a good chance we win the game
    • XL going to have put in some effort this off-season. As you and others have pointed out he is a rookie, so we expect "some struggles" as first year player. I'm old enough to remember Jerry Rice entering the NFL back in 85'. It seems hard to believe this now but the knock-on Jerry Rice after his rookie season was "He drops to many passes."  We know how that turned out. Rice became one of the most sure-handed receivers in NFL history from 1986 until his retirement two almost 2 decades later. That said, Jerry Rice was also one of the hardest working players in the league. He worked his tail off to be the best. XL has got to realize his major flaw and get it corrected headed into the 2025 season.
