Edge Rushers

I like Jalon Walker.  A chess piece. Georgia has a reputation for developing linebacker too. His role in that defense was something I could see Envero using. Not trying to move on from Josey causes he is killing it recently but Walker could be his eventual replacement. Lastly local guy.

Salisbury High School.  He can play in the box, edge, and cover--a three down LB that can be moved around--I actually want him.

Keep an eye on Marshall's Mike Green.  This year, had 17 sacks, 3 in games vs. Va Tech and Ohio State.  Last year?  9 sacks.  6'4, 250--great size.  SLEEEEEEPER.

While on the topic of Mike Green, he had 38 SOLO tackles, 81 overall--he averaged 1.5 sacks per game vs. Ohio St.  and Va Tech, so the level of competition does not seem to be a factor for him.  Tankathon has his as the 11th ranked Edge; NFL Draft Buzz has him rated 12.  I expect his stock to rise, but if it does not, I personally think he would be a steal in the second round.  NFL Draft Buzz has his 40 time at 4.57 (not sure where they got that).  He has the length, the size.  I look for consistency too--sometimes a player can have 4 sacks vs a reserve OT from Ricky's School for Wayward Teens and disappears in most other games.  He had sacks in every game except three, and in those games, he had 11, 8, and 5 tackles respectively.  That probably means (in the 11 and 8 games) that they were not passing the ball.  However, for an edge to have 81 tackles/38 solo tackles and 17 sacks is domination.  I should note that Marshall had a high scoring offense and the opposition was playing from behind a lot, but top-rated Abdul Carter had 1 sack in two games against Bowling Green and Kent.  In 7 of his 13 games, he did not have a sack.  Albeit the competition was better, but against a mutual opponent, Ohio State, Abdul had 4 tackles (2 solo) and 2 sacks--a very good game.  Against Ohio State, Green had 2 tackles and 1 sack.  To put that into perspective, Will Howard and Ohio State were sacked only 10 times all year--and Penn State had 3 of them.

You want a true sleeper?  I can tell you when the light came on.  His first six games in 2024, he had 1 sack.  His last seven games?  8.5 sacks.  3 FF.  6'3" 255.

Johnny Walker Jr. Missouri

As we look at these prospects, I can never quite grasp which “edge” projects as a 4-3 end and which projects as a 3-4 olb. Is there even a distinction anymore? I always think of the smaller Von Millers and Micah Parsons as the 3-4 OLB types and I’m thinking someone like Peppers as the 4-3 end but then I guess Peppers played OLB in GB.  It also seems like the OLBs end up walking up to the line half of the time.
Anyone have any tips on discerning the difference, especially in Evero’s defense?

Still got several games to watch, but I don't expect any major changes to my personal rankings for this year's edge class:

1. Abdul Carter (Penn State)
2. James Pearce Jr (Tennessee)
3. Mike Green (Marshall)
4. Nic Scourton (Texas A&M)
5. Donovan Ezeiruaku (Boston College)

7. Kyle Kennard (South Carolina)
8. Princely Umanmielen (Ole Miss)
9. Mykel Williams (Georgia)
10. Shemar Stewart (Texas A&M)
11. Jack Sawyer (Ohio State)
12. Antwaun Powell-Ryland (Virginia Tech)
13. Bradyn Swinson (LSU)
14. Landon Jackson (Arkansas)
15. Jared Ivey (Ole Miss)
16. Ashton Gillotte (Louisville)

Awesome list--I think Sawyer is a SLB who can hold the edge, but his stock soared in the playoffs and he is probably a late second, early third rounder imo. Instead of Sawyer, I might wait a round or two and take Arkansas Landon Jackson.  He is a bit nasty, and Morgan is there watching him.

I am increasing my opinion of Donovan Ezeiruaku from BC based on watching the drills at the SR Bowl.  He has some moves that are nearly unblockable.

I like Mike Green, but he spins a lot.  However, he had a bull rush in a drill and pancaked some OT.  Now, he is less likely to do that to an NFL OT, but he also had some rip/swims to the inside that were impressive.

This first round is going to be DL and LB-- around 18-20 players I would wager.

Sawyer splashed when the eyes were all focused on Ohio State, but in 16 games this past season his stat sheet reads 9 TFLs, 9 sacks, 1 INT, 7 PDs, 3 FFs. Compare that to his teammate, JT Tuimoloau, who in the same amount of time racked up 22 TFLs, 12.5 sacks, 3 PDs, and 2 FFs. Speaking only for myself, that bothers me. There are five things that I specifically look for in DL + EDGE prospects:

  • College production
  • Violent/technical hands
  • Burst off the snap
  • Ability to set the edge vs. the run
  • Can they convert speed-to-power vs. NFL OL?

Sawyer's production bothers me, but he's got a great motor and never stops giving effort. If he can convert speed-to-power and set the edge vs. the run, he's got a chance in the league.

Mike Green has a nasty pull slide that gets him a lot of mileage. If you want to see him takeover a game, watch him annihilate Coastal Carolina. I'm surprised the OT didn't quit football by halftime.

Donovan Ezeiruaku has some plays where he seems to just slip by the opposing OL as if he were an RB slipping passed a defender... dude has some burst! 😮

I think that I'm going to have to put Fadil Diggs (Syracuse) on here... 👀

    • I think its a predictable and fitting response.
    • Interesting for sure, I think I remember him saying if he could go back he’d tear every ligament in his knee to jump on that ball. I get where he is coming from on this, most people, especially social media, won’t take this well.
    • I think, at 8, there will be a player someone covets.  These top teams have few needs, so they might package a first and second and maybe a future pick to move up to take a player they covet.  Gonna think out loud here for a second-- Offensive tackle--I went to a site (randomly) that lists team needs in prioritized order. ELEVEN teams list OT as a priority.  (Ravens, Browns, Bears, Jets, Niners, Seahawks, Bucs, Chiefs, Packers, Commanders, Patriots, Rams).  IMO there are 2 elite OT prospects and probably 4 to 5 with first round grades. I see Sanders and Ward (QB), Hunter (CB), Carter (Edge) and Johnson (CB) going in the top 7--Graham or TMac are probably likely to go next.  The Jets pick 7 and will not be picking a QB.  They will probably take OT Will Campbell.  At that time, there is one elite OT left and ELEVEN teams that need an OT.  Granted, some will address this need in free agency, but how many starting OTs are available?  Now, consider you are the Chiefs, Seahawks, Packers, Bucs, or Ravens.  They have little to no cap space, so grabbing a stud OT in free agency is unlikely and there are not any.  You also realize that 10 or so picking before you need an OT.  Once the Jets take an OT---the Panther phones will be ringing--teams will target Kelvin Banks, OT Texas.  If they wait, they could hope that Josh Simmons (Ohio State) falls to them, but they are unlikely to wait for the unlikely.  So the Panthers will have to ask themselves, "Would I take the Commanders' first and second and the 2026 second rounder for our first rounder?"  We do not have a second rounder in 2026.  We'd pick 29th and 61st in 2025.  That would give the Panthers 3 picks in the first 61 picks.  So who might be there? Let's say that Graham (DE Michigan) is available at #8.  Most say "No brainer."  But the Phone rings offering you two second rounders to move back 21 spots in round 1.  You have a lot of needs.  What could you get? Estimates, based on Player Rankings: 27. Derrick Harmon, DT, Oregon 57. (from Rams--not part of trade)  Donovan Ezeiruaku, Edge, Boston College 61. Maxwell Hairston, CB Kentucky (assuming Mike Jackson leaves--Hairston has been eye opening at the SR Bowl practices) So basically, to give up on Graham, you get a good CB and a good DT and a future second rounder in a draft in which you had no second round.
