What if Panthers had that 17th pick?

(By Darin Gantt, [email protected]) The Carolina Panthers got a head start on this year's first-round pick, trading it last April so they could choose defensive end Everette Brown in the second round.p/After going 8-8 last season, the choice transferred to San Francisco ended up 17th overall. And while the Panthers think Brown has the potential to be a big-time pass rusher, many experts think he wouldn't have approached 17th if he was in this year's draft.

Jeremiah said if he was picking 17th for the Panthers, he'd be tempted to take Oklahoma tight end Jermaine Gresham.

That sentence negates everything. King, Rosario and Barnidge make a very good trio at tight end. They may not be perfect, but no 1st rounder would make an impact big enough to justify the pick.

If we absolutely needed a TE and we had the 17th pick I'm not sure if the FO woulda of taken Gresham over a DE anyways. Our trio at TE works perfectly in our system. I was never really a fan of Rosario to begin with (he played more like a receiver and missed too many blocks). I'm not going to lie but Jeff King is an asshole (my fiancee and I went to the taste of the panthers last year and believe it or not he and Jason Baker were two of the biggest stuck up pieces of poo that I've ever met) but I do like his style of play. When we drafted Barnidge I was ecstatic, he is going to be dynamic in the future hopefully this season. My favorite position is TE (I have Wesley Walls to thank for that, he is my favorite player of all time) eventhough they are usually overlooked, I know the feeling I played tight end in HS. Damn sorry to rant on about pointless poo.

Lets be honest here, we do have the worst TE situation in the division.....

However we would not draft one in that slot.

I have to be honest here and say that we most likely would have gotten a more talented player had we kept the pick, but....it is what it is.

Gantt mentions Jerry Hughes who is EXACTLY LIKE Everette Brown except a year later. These people are morons...

Using this same scenario. What if he stayed at Florida State. Brown would have dominated. He would have been in the same sentence with all the top defensive players in the draft.

If we had the 17th pick DE would be on our top priority list and Brown would be on that list.

We got the player we wanted a year early and was able to get a years worth of experience out of him. In the end we benefitted from this trade.

Also we added Goodson which made the deal sweeter.

Maybe as far as production but I would argue we actually have just as much talent. I think with Moore you are going to see the TE become a more integral part of our passing game and with guys like Barnidge and Rosario more opportunities is definitely a good thing. They have talent its just if we use it.

I hear where you are coming from, but I am not buying that one just yet.

I will start looking around, because I can't think clearly right now, to see....but we may have one of the bottom 5 TE situations in the NFC right now.

Not saying that we do, but I am thinking of many in the NFC that are in much better shape than we are right now.

What is scary about that, is we really don't have another proven weapon outside of Smith to catch the ball either.

I just think its funny because Brown's last year at FSU he had 13.5 sacks. If you compare those numbers to any other DE in the draft...he had as many or more.

He is 6'4'' 260lbs right now compared to:

Derrick Morgan: 6'4'' 270 12.5 sacks

Brandon Graham: 6'2'' 263 10.5 sacks

Jerry Hughes: 6'3'' 257 13.5 sacks

Jason Pierre-Paul: 6'6'' 260 6.5 sacks

So, basically this year we have a bunch of guys who are about the same size with about the same stats (or less) and one guy who is a physical specimen who has never done anything in college worthy of being mentioned as elite other than hitting the weight room.

Give me a break...I'll take Everette any day of the week in our Cover 2.
