Carolina may not "be sold" on young (per athletic)

Fields is a FA next year.

I don't foresee Justin Fields ever being an elite QB so I wasn't disappointed when we passed on him in the draft.  That said, if Carolina took a swing at him to legitimately compete with Bryce (or replace him) in 2025 while the team spent the draft and FA to rebuild the defense, then I could at least understand the reasoning. If Fields were signed for 3 years at a reasonable price, you could look for a QB in 2026 and groom him to take over by 2027. I also believe Canales would be arguably the best QB coach Fields has had in the NFL if he ended up in Carolina.

Ideally, with us having a top 10 pick in 2025 and a 2nd round pick on day 2, a solid QB prospect would fall to us without having to trade away everything like we did to get BY.

Since Fields will be a free agent next year, do you think it would be in the Panthers best interest to try signing him?

No. They need to draft someone for the future. Fields is a backup at best. Unless you plan to run the Wildcat all next year I would pass.

A lot of time between now and the draft

…time to evaluate Young and new QBs

we all know the options available for the franchise

i do not believe  the Panthers brain trust , such as it is,  believes  in Young. They believe his floor is his ceiling in the NFL

if that is true, then Fields becomes the youngest and probably best of the free agents and drafting a gb in the first rd is probable  and the rest of the draft probably all defense …young qb can sit and learn

of course, too, in a league desperate for qbs, the Panthers won’t be the only one vying for Fields

If Anthony Richardson can be a passer so can Justin Fields.

It depends on what you would want out of Fields at qb. I kind of feel the book has been written on him, and he is what he is. On the plus side, he can run around and make things happen, but on the minus, those things he makes happen aren't always great. He's more capable of winning than Bust Young, but not a long term solution. If we go the vet bridge route, all of them will have warts.

Who’s to say the Steelers are gonna let Fields leave?

If they think he has anything to develop they will keep him. They already have an established veteran so they have the luxury of developing a qb. We on the other hand do not.

And how exactly are they going to  force him to stay? They’re not franchise tagging him

It would be Fields who’d have to want to stay and be a backup versus taking a starting job here
