When was the last time the Panthers selected something unsurprisingly w/their #1 pick

With all of this "RECEIVER RECEIVER RECEIVER" talk, I think we're forgetting that the Panthers have a tendency to choose someone with their first pick that seemingly doesn't fit whatever our top need might be.

Remember just a couple of years ago when we were in desperate need of a defensive tackle and we didn't pick one until Round 6? Last year was a bit surprising, the Stewart pick was a surprise, nobody really saw the Beason pick coming.

You guys need to prepare for another position to get hit up first in Round 2 or I fear there may be a total meltdown of Panther fans.

The Stewart pick was definitely not a surprise at least not to me. Neither was Brown (had already shown a willingness to trade away future picks and Pep was still not a sure thing) but otherwise I agree with you. I tend to think it will be a DT maybe a DE. BPA and all.

Panthers trade down into the early 3rd round & pickup extra picks. With their first pick they select Tyson Alualu, DE/DT Cal, and then pick from the deep crop of receivers.

I agree the Panthers have been completely unpredictable in the past.

I doubt Alualu last until the 3rd. He could be gone before we even pick

Ditto. Wouldn't even be surprised if he slipped into the 1st really. I would be happier with Alualu than some of the guys projected to go at that range. Either way, the OP is right but so is Lout. The panthers have a few needs, like 3 or 4 every year and they use their first pick on the best player available among those few positions. What they don't do is feel like they have to reach for poistion, ie. draft for their biggest need just because it's there. I can't say I know who they'll pick on draft day, but at the very least it'll take something quite out of the moon to surprise me on draft day (RB in the 2nd round or something).

the Stewart pick was a surprise, QUOTE]

what? i called that one. also called the DeWill pick and liked the Beason pick but didn't call it.

this year, with no first round, it's really impossible to pick a second round player other than by position. I'm calling a DL.

Stewart and Beason weren't surprises to me. The earlier picks that shocked me the most in the Fox/Hurney era were Davis (only because Derrick Johnson was on the board still), Trading back into the first to get Jeff Otah right after we picked Stewart, Chris Gamble kind of surprised me I wasn't really high on him, Dwayne Jarrett(only because we had Keyshawn at the time, it was even more shocking when KJ got released) and Sherrod Martin (because I was so high on Sean Smith)
