Canales

Recommended Posts

Hes a rookie...I like what I see him trying to do and the players we have to execute just on offense.   Let these guys gel and it could pay dividends.  Draft D this go round intersprinkled with offensive players. I actually see building going on thats positive..... We still need a QB... Bryce can step up to complicate that if he wishes... but Netflix and Warcraft wont do it.

I keep saying it but Canales gets too cute sometimes, especially when working with a QB who's trying to regain his confidence and who is throwing to mostly rookies who are going to flash but also be inconsistent with drops and routes.

That said, from what I see on the field and on the sidelines, the overall team mood seems a lot better. They know they aren't very good right now, but it's not like it's a funeral either.

I am not convinced he is "the guy" but he does appear to be slowly improving.

I don’t think you can point to a single game and say “that was great play calling”. But as you point out, he is getting better.  He’s not great but I don’t think people hate him and he has the locker room (it appears so).

I think he has navigated the Bryce benching fairly well and I suspect he had to deal with some issues with Diontae and no one seems to be worse for wear so kudos to him.  If I had to guess I think when he retires from coaching most of his career will have been spent as an OC but that is my take and hope I am very wrong.

I haven't seen anything in particular over the weeks that gets me excited about Canales. I have seen some things that have made me skeptical.

Off the field, he's been somewhat of a flip-flopper, and he's also well-versed in saying nothing (after he gave us the feeling that he was going to be a breath of fresh air), so I don't know if you can take what he says at face value.

Grade? TBD.

I'm not crazy about Canales's background but I've come around to love his process.  His love of the process.  Do things the best way according to all the data you have, your experience, the analytics, the input of your staff.

I actually think he has been doing very well with play calling.  Those screen passes or throws to the flat are to give Bryce an option when he doesn't have the pass he wants and gives him something safe to checkdown to quickly so that he's not holding onto the ball.  As Bryce gets more comfortable as an NFL QB and in Canales system we'll see more things start to open up.

What others think is Canales being too cute I think is setting things up for a play later on or calling a safer play or a play with a lot more motion and moving parts but it's really a simple play with a lot of eye candy.

Canales even stated the first game of the year was on him as he tried to run his system no matter the players.  He's had to adjust to his players.  He's navigated benching last year 1st overall draft pick, while continuing to coach the team and continue to improve and build a new culture.  He's been very impressive with Bryce no matter if you think he can improve him or if you think he's coaching around Bryce's limitations until he can get "his" guy.  Either way I think he's done an excellent job.

We've been so bad for so long I relish what he, Dan and the rest of the staff are doing with a lot of young players and building a new culture.

One thing that Canales has done that is a difference maker is the offensive line coaching staff and system. Yes we added two great guards, but everyone is looking better this year. Even our backups look good. We haven’t had that in a long time, and that is worth a lot!

Some of his play calling has been questionable, like not give Chubba the ball more when he is dominating. But definitely something to build on.

In my opinion, at this point, Canales can't be judged on his play calling. He knows the limitations of his QB and has to call every play with that in mine. Again, my opinion, he's doing the best he can under the circumstances.
