How would you approach the draft?

Recommended Posts

It is no secret that we have a lot of holes that need to be filled. I love the Panthers policy of building through the draft. I think this is the only way to have a quality team year after year.

The 2010 draft is being called a "deep" draft. Lots of talent in the spots that the Panthers are in need. I am going to go ahead and say we need:

WR who is fast (could be a future #1, deep threat, return man)

WR who is tall (possesion type, goal line threat)

DT (who can pressure the QB, we have run stoppers)

DE (one more body to throw into the mix of our youth here)

CB (I am pretty sure Marshall will not be on the team)

SSLB (Connor is going to be slow converting from a true MLB)

What I am getting at is, how would you go about getting more draft picks?

option 1, we trade players (maybe a RB, Marshall)

option 2, we trade away next years draft (I hate this idea)

option 3, we trade down further and hope we can find quality players in rounds 4-7

It is obvious that we are going to do something in this draft, what would you do?

I go after taylor price, and javier arenas, and linvall joseph personally.

Taylor price is big, fast, and a great blocker (and he takes pride in his blocking skills) he's also apparently easily coached.

Arenas is a beastly return guy, I know we just picked up THE brian witherspoon, but it'd still be nice to have another corner who is fast and covers decently.

Linval joseph just because I go to ECU and the kid is a beast. go after him or CJ wilson, I personally think wilson is the better player from what I have actually seen, but DT is apparently what we "need"

for some reason, when I try to get on the draft board, I get this error:

First you approach the draft from downwind, and when its not looking pounce.

I know its a lot to hope for but I would like a WR that can get open and catch. I like Gilyard for his overall game, or someone like Price; or more of a slot guy like Decker or shipley.

3rd round, likely go DE or if a good DT falls in the third fine; but we still have Ivins from last year. Depends on his health.

I might go for an OL line in 4th round; likely a tackle; perhaps a center/guard combo.

if we don't get 2 receivers, i'm gonna go crazy and blow up the world. we could use a fat run stopper at dt, but one may not be there that is any good. de should be a high priority. i'd say qb, but i don't know what qb would be available late. our first two picks should be 2 wrs, or 1 wr and a defensive lineman, preferably an end. anything else and i'll say we stink.

This is what i would like to see done. If Marshall keeps acting like a spoiled brat i would shop him. Hoping for a mid to late 2nd or top of the 3rd. I say we ship him to the hellhole that is Detroit for their 3rd.

2. Brandon Ghee, Wake Forest, 6'0'' 191lbs and runs a sub 4.4. Local talent.

3. Torrell Troup, UCF, 6'3'' 315lbs looked very good in East-West game. Strong and explosive enough to be the perfect hybrid of a Fox NT and a Meeks DT.

3. Marcus Easley, UConn, 6'3'' 215lbs ran 4.45. Played in a rushing offense can block well and stretch the field with his speed.

4. Greg Hardy, Ole Miss, At one point was considered the BEST DE prospect of the draft. Our locker room would either get him up to speed or spit him out. If he could reach his potential we could end up with a steal in the fourth.

6. Brandon Banks, KSU, Garner, NC native has speed that kills. A KR/PR specialist that is shifty and dangerous.

That sounds like you put some thought into it. Looks pretty good.

I agree, I think Marshall is gonna get the boot here in the next few days or during the draft.

    • Yes.  And this converts directly to confidence.  Does the coach have confidence to call a deep dig or seam route?  Does Bryce have confidence in his ability to be the Alpha?  Do his teammates have confidence.  About film--when I see Cam Newton's pre-snap confidence vs. Bryce's, it is night and day.   Film--tells you if the WRs are open (why l love watching the Replay telecasts from the end zone cameras--you can see it.  I have seen 2 WRs open and Bryce's eyes are on the outlet WR or the pass rush. )  You can see progressions, and he has improved a bit--but he is very quick to rush through 1 and 2 and checkdown--that is a lack of confidence in his ability to read the defense.  I had a former NFL TE (Deems Maye) who played QB in high school (not sure about college) tell me that the best QBs read the defense by knowing where everyone will be when the ball is to arrive--not where they are.  I think his QB at the time was Humphries.  He said that Humphries would throw the ball into coverage before the cuts etc.  because he understood DB momentum, zone areas, etc.  and he could just see it.  Said so when people say nobody was open, they are usually right because nobody should be "open" when the QB has the ball--when the ball arrives, everyone should be open.  He said Humphries was never "great" but his skills were limited--from a small school--but his ability to read a defense made him never give up on a route.
