Mortensen: Panthers interested in Umenyiora

Seems he will be traded after the draft if at all. So we would be using next years picks. Even if there is no next year.

Maybe.

There's really two questions at the heart of this discussion:

1) Is it likely to happen?

2) Would it be a good idea?

Number two is the biggest debate. I'm leaning toward "no" the more I think about it because they've already invested in guys like Brown and Johnson. It might be time to sink or swim with them.

Number one depends a lot on how Chris Mortensen defines the Panthers being interested. For a lot of sports guys, "could be interested" actually means, "don't know anything from inside the actual team, but I think it would be a good idea".

Pay me and I'll post whatever you want...

On the reals (on the subject of Huddle stuff)... Say I win the lottery this week... Can I buy the Huddle some more hardware or something like that?

Not that there is a problem at all since the new server is in, but I just wanted to do my part to help keep this place up and running...

...Or, can I buy it out completely (I mean, I would have won the lottery and all) and ban people just because they disagree with me?

The real issue with Osi is whether he is healthy or not. If he is this year he will get 10+ sacks and honestly I would be surprised if Brown and Johnson together get 10 sacks this year. I don't see how bringing in another DE with experience would be hurting Brown's or Johnson's development. We have always had a 4 DE rotation and when Brayton or Johnson move inside on passing downs we use 3 or 4 DEs all at once. Brown has not shown he can start in this league and Johnson has been slow to develop. With any kind of injury to any DE this year we are looking at a super thin group. Anyone who has watched the Panthers long knows that injuries hit us often in groups and often to the same position like it did at DT last year. Seems to me you won't get many chances to get a player of Osi's caliber outside of a crazy year like this one. We should take advantage of the opportunity while the price is reasonable.

With my predictive powers though, this will guarantee that we don't touch him with a 10 foot pole. :D

I'd give a 4th, but definitely a 5th. At a point, he was a threat, even if he did have a great casts of defensive linemen to play with, you just can't put any DE over there and have that production. You give a 4th/5th and are taking a chance on a young talent anyway, why not let it be someone with experience and that could become the threat he was in the "NFL". He's 29, sure, but a 5th? That's a no-brainer. I wonder what the VaGiants are expecting.

Uhh...w-t-f...

Citing two league sources, the NY Daily News disputes a report that Osi Umenyiora would be available for trade during the draft.

Adding to a Newark Star-Ledger report, the Daily News says Umenyiora wasn't available to interested teams like the Panthers and Rams as recently as "a few weeks ago." The Giants reportedly wouldn't even listen to trade offers. We try not to believe much at this time of year, however, and wouldn't be one bit surprised if the Giants used an early-round pick on a pass rusher and Umenyiora joined another team's roster by April 24.

New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora(notes) wants to be a starter again but now he's got 6'5", 265-pounder Mathias Kiwanuka(notes) in his way. Kiwanuka isn't planning to give up the spot easily so it seemed safe to say that the Giants would see what kind of value the team could get for Umenyiora via trade during the draft that starts Thursday.

Despite all the speculation, the New York Daily News is saying, however, that the Giants have no interest in dealing Umenyiora. If the team did want to make a deal, though, the paper reports that the St. Louis Rams and Carolina Panthers would both love to retain his services.

If he stays in New York, it should at least be a fun battle to watch through training camp.
