Mortensen: Panthers interested in Umenyiora

Alex Brown got around $3 Million per year for 2 years...

He is a year or so older than Osi, and sure, he's a subjectively less talented...

That said, he was straight up released by the Bears... They didn't have anyone burning up the phones...

Osi's contract is similar to the new one Brown got, and he carries some injury risk (along with some other baggage (whining about PT))... I don't think the phone will be burning up for him...

Patience, young padawans...

Also of note, I mentioned us going after Osi a while back this offseason, if I remember correctly... I'll have to search...

I don't think that Osi and Brown are anywhere close in ability or trade value.

I would be glad if you were right. I guess we will know in the next week if we pursue it. I would prefer we not trade away any picks this year but honestly if we can get him for a 4th and perhaps a 4th next year, it would be well worth it.

I wouldn't argue that a third is good value Umenyiora (I'd prefer lower, but it's probably a fair offer).

Still, I have to say I really don't want to see them trading away any of this year's picks for any veteran, honestly.

In my mind, the best thing they can do with this draft is get a solid group of young players to throw into the mix.

Once the draft is over, if you want to look at other options or future picks, as long as it's not too high a pick.

Seems he will be traded after the draft if at all. So we would be using next years picks. Even if there is no next year.

there will be a draft in 2011 no matter what. there has never been any doubt about that.

i wouldn't be opposed to trading a pick this year as long as it isn't too early (a 6th or 7th i would have no problem with.

next years picks....we are delusional if we think we won't be trading one of those at some point.

Something to keep in mind, that next years picks don't hold the same value as this year picks. At least, as of this moment.

I can see them trading many of next year picks to load up on the boat load of talent that is available this draft.

I do hope that most of you will watch the first round, as I do expect us to move up...if not into the late first, then early 2nd for sure. Specially with the 2nd round being friday night. With the draft being spread apart like it is, there is going to be a lot more trades going on.
