Mortensen: Panthers interested in Umenyiora

If we were so desperate at DE, we'd have brought in Alex Brown before the Saints had a chance to snag him up...

Valid point.

Either Brown, or trading a late pick for Osi would help the DE position.

However, not talking with Brown is good evidence that we will not move on Osi.

the first visit he lined up was to the saints. that doesn't mean that they were the first to contact him.

if you had a choice of going to play for the team that just won the superbowl and you were pretty much assured of a starting role or the team that struggled to finish 8-8 and has ?? at HC and QB and just unloaded a ton of vet players, who wold you want to go visit first? most of the time you are going to go visit the team who you are the most interested in playing for and unless they throw out a garbage offer you are more than likely going to take it.

we didn't have a real chance.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have him...

But not at the expense of draft picks... and if the Panthers FO has indicated anything this offseason, it is that they will be content in waiting in situations like these...

Bottom line, is that the market for trading for players isn't what it used to be (Ginn for a 5th for example) and we'll be content with waiting it out in hopes that they simply release him... Very similar to Campbell...

If he gets released he will cost more than if we trade for him. So you either pay in a current or future draft choice or give him up front money in a signing bonus. For me I would rather give a draft pick next year since we will pick up another compensatory pick next year (3rd rounder) for Peppers.

who will be Johnson and Browns backups if we don't get a Vet like Osi?

if we are going with brayton/johnson/brown...we are looking at a bad year. we need someone else for sure. we need someone else that knows what they are doing brought in or at least an early draft pick up.

the panthers are pretty weak/thin at DE right now.

Osi wouldn't cost more if he were released... lol...

Tell that to the guys we've cut who are having trouble finding work at a better rate than they had here...

How many of those guys had 13 and 7 sacks in their last 2 seasons? Even last year when he was recovering from surgery he had 7 sacks after starting 11 games. He isn't exactly a journeymen or guy just looking for work.

Though many do not like it. This is the best polcy. Unfortunately patience isn't one of this forums greatest attributes.

The Rams and Panthers reportedly expressed serious interest in trading for Osi Umenyiora during the Senior Bowl and February's Combine.

At the time, the Giants were not entertaining any offers. However, Giants beat reporter Mike Garafolo agrees with NFL Network's Mike Lombardi that Umenyiora could be put on the block if New York uses the 15th overall pick on Jason Pierre-Paul, who GM Jerry Reese seems to covet. Umenyiora, 28 and coming off his worst season, might be available for a third-round pick.

Alex Brown got around $3 Million per year for 2 years...

He is a year or so older than Osi, and sure, he's a subjectively less talented...

That said, he was straight up released by the Bears... They didn't have anyone burning up the phones...

Osi's contract is similar to the new one Brown got, and he carries some injury risk (along with some other baggage (whining about PT))... I don't think the phone will be burning up for him...

Patience, young padawans...

Also of note, I mentioned us going after Osi a while back this offseason, if I remember correctly... I'll have to search...
