Mortensen: Panthers interested in Umenyiora

we need a vet DE.

So you say. If a player is not gonna be happy with his role, miss TC with injuries and cost a draft pick we don't need him that bad. The draft that is four days away is one of the deepest ever. Have you seen the free agents this year? They are all over 30 and broken down.

When there is young cheap talent like Alex Daniels, Lindsey Witten, Greg Hardy, Austen Lane and others you don't trade for another teams headache. We could get Osi's younger clone Brandon Lang of Troy to develop. With the picks we have invested in Everette Brown we need to get him on the field. Brayton and CJ will also see lots of time. Bring in a rookie and give him the leftovers unless he earns more. But your argument is pretty strong.

But but but but... With Peppers gone what do we have? A bunch of no names... We need a big name player pick up or else where going to go 0-16 like the f**kin' lions. We used to be Jake and the Caridac Cats, but this season where gonna get f**ked like Josie and the Pu**y Cats!!! Someone must bring an end to this madness...

Only way I'd go for Umenyiora is if it is after the draft and he is cut...

Otherwise, we have much too many needs other than DE to give up draft picks for him...

We did give up a first rounder to get a DE last year, in case you forgot... Let's give him a fair chance before we go hitting the panic button...

Problem is that if he is cut, he will want a new contract and we wouldn't get him for his current contract which is pretty cheap. We could easily give up a conditional draft pick next year than escalates if he he performs well for us this year. That way everyone is happy.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have him...

But not at the expense of draft picks... and if the Panthers FO has indicated anything this offseason, it is that they will be content in waiting in situations like these...

Bottom line, is that the market for trading for players isn't what it used to be (Ginn for a 5th for example) and we'll be content with waiting it out in hopes that they simply release him... Very similar to Campbell...

Lets be real It's not like Osi has been a headcase for years. He was angry he lost his spot while injured and express his fustration after getting his ass kicked here. Other then last year you haven't heard much bad press about Osi.

When there is young cheap talent like1. Alex Daniels, Lindsey Witten, Greg Hardy, Austen Lane and others you don't trade for another teams headache. We could get Osi's younger clone Brandon Lang of Troy to develop. With the picks we have invested in 2.Everette Brown we need to get him on the field. Brayton and CJ will also see lots of time. 1.What Osi has over these player we know he can play and can be a impact next year. All these guys no matter what they did in college or the combine are still question marks.

2. Eb will still get on the field if you get Osi so would Brayton and CJ. Too generate a good pass rush we will need them all to be fresh. The only way they stay fresh is rotating them all in and out. I don't think EB or CJ can take the pounding of playing alot of snaps against LT who would mostly out weight them by 60-80 pounds. So we will need a good rotation of 4-5 DE to keep the healthy all season.

You can't field a team with nothing but 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year players. To have a good team you have too mix in some Vets. Example: Kris Jenkins wouldn't be the player he was here if he didn't have Buckner. The Dline wouldn't have been as good without Buck. Young players need vets to teach them stuff that will give them a edge during the game. You talk about getting more young inexp. player too back-up our young inexp. players. A DE rotation with Osi, EB, CJ, and Brayton is less of a question mark then what ever player you can get in the draft.

For three years absolutely.Osi has been hurt but is only 28 and not over the hill. He would be a bargain at that price.

He would be a steal at that price and he would be a player that would command a double team. How many players do we have that would do that?

they wouldn't/shouldn't do anything until after the draft. i'd take him over a 5th/6th round pick any day. maybe a fourth rounder.... next year.
