Mortensen: Panthers interested in Umenyiora

At this point it is hard to say how much of a smokescreen al of this is heading into the draft. The Giants could be serious they want him, may be wanting to drive up the price or could be tryig to disguise who they are going to pick in the first round of the draft. If they get a pass rusher then Osi is somewhat disposable. Still until the draft is over I don't think you can believe what anyone says.

Sounds to me like Mort is assuming the Panthers would be interested based on a perceived need and does not have any hard info that they actually are.

Based on the roster purge this year, I'd be surprised if the Panthers were interested. Even if the Panthers are interested, we don't have the trade ammunition to compete with a team like the Rams (assuming they're interested).

Not so sure, if you look at the wording. He stated three teams are "interested" but separated out the Panthers and Rams as teams that would "love" to acquire him. That's too strong a word to use for just "perceived interest". I've got a feeling he knows something.

Mind you, if the Rams would truly love to get him (and they have a coach that knows him well, so it's no stretch) I think they have a lot better shot at it than we do. They'd probably be more likely to deal a pick in this year's draft, whereas I think we want to hold on to as many of this season's picks as we can.

The more I've thought about it, the more I'm leaning against it. But as with anything, if it happens, it happens.
