That perspective I get.  I'm still a bit iffy on Morgan, although the draft class has looked alright.

It will take at least another offseason to establish a core group here.  The defense is a sieve, unsure on coaches & QB. And we'll have to get ahead of the curve looking for a Moton replacement as well.  Not so sure that's in house right now.

I would imagine a Moton extension is probably coming.  I'm just not sure I understand the strategy.  We have so much invested in running the ball, but we don't have a defense or a QB.  It seems like it will be very difficult to put together a viable roster with this setup.  We cannot draft an entirely new defense.  We need some money allocated there too.  And I'm not completely sold that we are solid at WR and TE.

On the other hand you have a third year UDFA #4 in the league in SF filling in for injured huge money CMC.

The Niners RB room is waaaaaaaaay more pricey than ours.  CMC is $19 million by himself.  Before the injuries people liked what the Niners were building.  People love what the Lions are building and they are locking in their RBs, a 1st rounder and a vet they just extended.  The assets allocated to our RB room aren't that crazy honestly.

I keep thinking it's looking like a better and better spot for a young QB to land looking at the offense.

The difference is those teams are competing today.  We're not even close.

Taylor is a dude I would love to see go to a contender and experience some success in the league before he hangs it up.  He's probably got one contract left in the pros and we've got him locked in next season (rest is voidable).  We could be in a spot to grab a young OT in R2-4 this draft that can backup for a season and then take over.  Would love to start backfilling a strength to avoid it becoming a weakness.  Can't have the bottom fall out if we want to be this run heavy team.  Also--just need to figure out the damn QB spot ha - oh and defense.  Lot's to still figure out but back to Chuba - don't think this really straps us.  It's a difference between a 2-4 mil FA contract and a 8 mil known asset that works with the pieces we have.  That's a $4 mil difference on a $260 mil cap.  Manageable.

And it could be substantially less. Outside of a handful of elite guys there's no one who should be getting paid "starter money" at RB. It's a plug and play position. We drafted Brooks to be our starter. We can find a serviceable backup with a mid to late round pick or low level free agent deal. We need a QB and a whole defense. A backup RB with a starter contract or starter draft capital investment is the last thing this roster needs.

I mean the deal isnt that bad I admit, but its just curious for a lot of reasons.  I seriously doubt he would have gotten that on the open market and I really really didnt want to put anything else against our cap until we get out of 2025 but again its not much.  The really odd thing is how much draft capital we have given up for 2 running backs while only 1 has played.   A 4rth, 2 fifths and a second.    4 picks just seems like a lot given this team and the holes on it.  Personally you could have let him walk and more then likely duplicated his overall production in the draft and just start again.

He is just saying you can find really cheap guys to produce in the nfl at the RB position

the hit next year is 31 million which  is kindof nuts so the only way around that is to extend him or get him to agree to a paycut which aint happening.  So seems to me they are lining up for next season to be his last.  Which would be fine since he would be 31 and is expensive as hell.  I dont remember so I will have to go back and read about the deal but damn why was it so back loaded to start with?

But why keep looking for those kinda guys when you have one on your team? You keep signing those guys and they dont pan out, what do you do then? Try again? and sign another one?

IMO you absolutely never sign a qb as a free agent.  They are easy to find in the draft

Chuba was still on a rookie deal so he was only making a little over $1M a year

I didn’t take the time to find his old contract butI was able to find that he had a 3.25 million dollar cap hit so that sounds incongruous. Maybe it was 3.29 I read it earlier.

edit: to those calling it big money, I know it is money but how big it is, when WRs are getting well over 20 million per, and over ten years ago the Panthers were paying DW 8.5 mil per.

When you get two years down the road are those numbers gonna look that bad, if he plays well?

    • There's a real physical toll that playing in the NFL takes on the body.  Certain things just won't work the same, which will make some of those challenges painful and hard.  These folks are all rich and have cushy lives to return to.  I'm not saying Cam will leave first, but I can see it after a few episodes when old injuries flare up.  Or he decides he's done with it.
    • His size could work against him…BUT Cam is a weird duck.  He was wired differently.  I would bet on the young Cam that could barely get dressed after a loss….that dude wouldn’t have quit easily IMO.  But that dude doesn’t exist anymore.
    • i got attacked by a housecat once. pretty terrifying.  i was at a friends house and the cat jumped on my lap. it was calm for a minute but then it turned on it's back and bit my hand and sunk it's claws into my arm, all four of them so i grab the thing and pull the thing off my arm, dragging it's claws down my arm. i finally get the crazy thing off and throw it on the ground then it grabs my leg (fortunately i was wearing jeans that day) and the owner, who has just been sitting there in shock watching this happen to this point, grabs the thing and carries it downstairs and throws it outside.  supposedly that cat had never done anything like that before. i had been over there a lot and never had any problems with that cat. but something happened to it and it was never the same. went completely mental. they kept it outside after that. one week they went on vacation for a few days and apparently a stray chow came around and when they got home, the chow had the cat trapped under a car. no telling how long it had been there.  they chased off the chow and the cat ran off and they never saw it again. then that chow came back and hung around for a while and was terrorizing the other animals, including an old horse they had in a pasture. it killed at least one cat that i know of. they called animal control on it and they found it under one of their outbuildings. they figured the only thing they could do is shoot the thing. they shot it with a shot gun and it took one blast and then went running towards the guy who shot it and had to shoot it again.
