Uncle of mine served under Patton and Omar Bradley in WW II.

His opinion: Bradley was a true leader. Patton was a glory-grabbing POS.

Certainly Patton loved the headlines. But if you look at the performance of the various armies, Patton out performed Bradley on the battlefield, and had a better understanding of mobile warfare than any of the other US generals on the Western front. And while Patton had a reputation as a hardass, it was rare to see him get rid of a subordinate, while Bradley fired several of his.

The man shot a defenseless mule. Horrible, horrible man.
