CO:Success isn't a given for receivers

This is why I think we would be wise to sign a veteran FA WR and spend our 2nd round pick on the best DE or DT on the board.

Bottom line, I think our 2nd round pick this year is too valuable to spend on a WR.

So... 7 DTs and 8 DEs could be off the board already, Arrelious Benn and Golden Tate could be sitting there at 48 but you'd pass on them to pick the #8 rated DT or #9 rated DE because WR is too "risky".

Good article from the Charlotte Observer on how much of a crapshoot it is to draft a WR: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/04/15/1376968/success-isnt-a-given-for-receivers.html

that was what I wanted as well as a lot of other people but they must know something we dont lol, there was Burleson and Bryant that were on the top of my list I hoped we would sign, then there was the Boldin trade and even Coles was a FA that slipped away, I really think we needed 1 more veteran on the roster at WR

Something I've noticed about WR's that are able to contribute early: Most are good return men. Steve Smith obviously, but look at the recent success stories: Johnny Knox, Eddie Royal, Jeremy Maclin, Percy Harvin, DeSean Jackson and to some extent guys like Mike Thomas, Sammie Stroughter and Harry Douglas who have all shown promise in their rookie years.

Maybe their elusiveness helps them get off the line?

Thats why you do what you have to to move up to take guys that are the best bets. Unless we want to wait until next year to try and take Floyd, Green, or Julio Jones in the first round we need to hope that a good receiver falls to us. IDT that Tate is a "risk." I think that he is a pretty sure bet with his skill set.

Damian Williams is a great return man. ;)

i'm not unhappy about not getting bryant (bad dude for the locker room) or burleson (nowhere near worth the $$ the lions paid for him).

i do wish we could have gotten boldin. i moved on, though.

coles is still out there but he should be. he isn't very good. bengals were wise to cut their losses with him. funny that they turned around and got another troubled child in bryant but whatever...ain't my team.

still....the first FA class was going to be pretty weak and teams having the needs that they did and the urgency they felt despite how early in the season made for some weaker prospects to be overvalued/overpaid. i'm glad that we didn't fall for it.

better value picks will be there in the next FA wave....oh, in case you're wondering, coles will be there as well.

Unless the panthers move up in the draft I Really really doubt Tate will be there when we pick. Very unlikely

Defensive lineman are gonna go fast and furiously. With teams changing over to 3-4 schemes and other 3-4 teams looking to get younger. Nose Tackles and Athletic DT's that could be used at DE will go quickly Defensive Lineman is not a deep talent pool. Charles Johnson, EverReady Brown, and Tyler Brayton are good starters and rotation. Guys like Jermaine Cunningham, Alex Carrington and Corey Wooton may seem like good choices to you at 48 but they don't to me. Carrington and Wooton both could be targeted to be converted to 3-4 DE's. Cunningham should be available in the THIRD.

We have talent in the interior of our Dline also. Teams like the Bronco's and Patriots that have multiple 2nd round picks are looking at players like Lamar Houston and Tyson Alualu to play DE for them. SO.. i think the pickings are gonna be slimmer than most calling for DE or DT with our 2nd think.

Wide Receiver on the other hand is a position that many teams have addressed in FA. The Bengals signed Antonio Bryant, the Ravens finally got Anquan, Dolphins signed Baby TO, TO himself has not found a team yet, and the Jets got Holmes. With only Seattle, Denver, St.Louis, Tampa Bay, New England, and Cleveland picking ahead of us that need a WR desperately. The Rams are in position to get a 1st round talent that slips, it could be a DE not a WR. Denver has several picks in the first 47 picks they could take Dez early or wait and take someone else. Tampa has two high 2nd's one of them will be a WR. Cleveland and Seattle have so many needs WR may not be as high. New England will add firepower. Point is i like my chances picking between Mardy Gilyard, Carlton Mitchell, Andre Roberts, Brandon Lefell, and Taylor Price more than scrounging through the bargain bin DE and DT's that will be left after the top 10 DT's and Top 5 4-3 DE's are taken.

The answer to the problem is obvious: draft a TON of WR's.

that's what i think. unless we get at least two receivers in the draft, i will have no respect for our team's draft preparation this year. it's a huge hole on our team, and to trust our 2nd round pick to be good is ignorant, because they've already been taken by that in the past.

    • I call bullshit. Brady,Manning,Brees and Burrow are all just ball distributors. And the better thier supporting cast and more experience they got the better they got. Thier best attributes were between the ears.  Now I'm not saying Bryce is gonna turn into one of them but what I want is for him. Is to have a solid roster around him and some coaching continuity too see if he takes the next step. Because everything I've seen and read after the benching is that his mental toughness and workethic are what we need in a QB
    • Many criticize our picks in 2024. I believe that most of them were picked because their ceiling is better than those selected before them.  XLs needs to learn how to play in the NFL. Once he gets up to speed he'll be worthy of 32nd pick.  Brooks, showed why we took him in the few games he played. The ACL injury really sucks but he can overcome these setbacks. Remember TD had 3 ACLs and eventually will be in the ring of honor one day.  Wallace will be a solid LB going forward with experience  Sanders, TE is a tough position to play. He a getting valuable playing time and will become a good TE.  Going down the remaining draft pics all seem to have a good upside. They may not be showing much now but they will start showing their worth next season.
    • I think he's shown enough that if a QB fell to us at our pick we'd either draft a defensive player or trade down for more picks.
