Bryce is still the future

Dalton, 5 games starting - 19.4 PPG

Bryce, 6 starts since coming back from being benched - 20.5 PPG

So, he's been marginally better than our backup QB. And that's counting the shameless stat padding garbage-time TD with 3 seconds left, against backups playing prevent D, down 28-7 against the Broncos.

Take that out and Bryce is averaging 19.3 PPG. Worse than Dalton with the same supporting cast.

Yeah it's nice that he doesn't look like the worst QB in NFL history anymore, but seeing people doing backflips like he's arrived as this next great franchise QB is baffling.

Bryce is 4-20 as a starter in the NFL. He’s looking better as of late but I mean, as it stands right now if he won 11 games the next 3 seasons he’d STILL have a losing record. Bryce might never have a winning record as a QB and still have a somewhat successful career, his career started that badly. We shall see is right but he still had a massive mountain to climb.

Cam Newton had his record used against him when he was in the middle of the best two-year stretch by any QB in this franchise's past, present or future. Record is the most important stat, but it's not the whole story.

Young deserves some of that blame but the last couple months are on his teammates more than him. That said, we're all sitting here propping him up before a 4-turnover fiasco against Dallas. Every offensive skill position has cost them a game lately. He's probably due.

I'm much more inclined to keep Bryce than trade him for another rookie QB.  I think Canales has actually done a really good job of getting Bryce back to who he was at Alabama.  Bryce does continue to have physical limitations, but he's definitely playing better.

Is Bryce perfect?  Nope.  Does he have a lot of things to "clean up" as the Panthers are fond of saying?  Yes he does.  If he gets better in this areas, will he become a better pro QB?  I think so.  Will that make him a top 10 QB?  Maybe?

The thing about QBs is you need to be patient.  They all need support.  Once they find a guy, they always talk about surrounding him with weapons.  Bryce is no different.  Everyone needs a supporting cast.  Look at the Buffalo game yesterday.  Allen made some crazy good plays!  His runs, throwing some crazy good balls!  He really showed his bag of tricks.  But Allen didn't catch those balls, he didn't play defense, and he didn't play special teams.

Wins and losses are far too often associated with QBs when they are as much a team issue.  You can have a QB have a great games, but if the other parts of the team don't come through, it's still a loss.

I think the Panthers have to give Bryce next year before they really start considering if he's the guy for the long term or not.

Context:

3 of those 6 are against Denver, KC, and Philly.  All top 5 defenses.

Dalton looked great in one game.

Bryce is not a franchise QB at the moment.  But he looks like he COULD be one based on the way he is playing.    And there is nothing baffling about being excited by that.

I mean, that ball is routinely caught in the NFL.

Doesn't mean it's not a hard catch, and the point still stands that a number of things going differently earlier in the game prevents it from coming down to that situation. No game is ever won/lost on a single play, call, etc. That's the reality. Players need to step up when circumstances require, and especially a highly-touted first rounder (albeit a decidedly raw one), but it's a bit silly to sit and drill XL for having a weakness that everyone already knows he had like it's the only way Carolina could have ever won.

Bryce's interception was ugly and set up Philly for a TD before the half, at least it seems that way from  the highlights and gameflow since I wasn't able to watch, Elliott's miss that I already mentioned, etc. The team drafted XL knowing what his weaknesses are and they have died by the sword at times this year. All part of the growing pains.

His stats still aren’t impressive but for the first time we’re getting glimpses of what could be with Bryce. Sunday I saw the playmaker I was expecting on Day 1.  I can imagine a future where Bryce is a top QB with the right roster around him, that’s worth giving him some more time while we focus on making the rest of the team better.

Pulling the plug on him by drafting a QB early is the nuclear option. Losing our investment in Bryce would set us back so tremendously that it needs to be a last resort. Draft a different position in the first and even if we do dump Young later at least the roster around the QB will be improved.

I’m with @frankwon the QB competition but I don’t see it happening now that it looks like their approach is working, slow as it might be. Dying art in the NFL. My moneys on some late round QB of Canales’s choosing to basically be the backup in training

He hasn't had the same supporting cast since returning. The #1 target and leading receiver is gone. Coker has missed 2 games and Sanders has missed one (he wasn't quite right yesterday either - may have come back too soon). Heck, Thielen has only been back like 2 games along with Tremble, right? The first couple of games it was only the rookies - Legette, Coker and Sanders. But he did have Ian Thomas. Andy didn't really have him for most of his run.

Bryce's interception was a big play. Particularly since Philly drove down and scored a TD. Not the right time to take a chance there. Actually it was just a bad miss. Even if he didn't see the safety (which I doubt), it wasn't even close to being catchable. It happens.

As for XL, he is a rookie with the yips. Maybe he's hitting the wall. I think he'll be fine once he gets his confidence back. He's questioning every catch and pressing because of it. That was a fairly routine catch for an NFL WR. That was a fairly routine catch for Legette. He caught it with both hands and just didn't secure it.

Trading away Diontae Johnson has been the only major change, and that's probably a positive if we're being honest as he spent half the time pouting and giving up on routes.

Yeah, BY has only had Thielen for 2 games since returning to the starting lineup. Well Dalton had him for less than 1.

It's largely the same group of guys. Just straight up nit-picking at this point.

I'm not nitpicking. I'm pointing out fallacies in your statement. So take out Diontae and Adam from the Raiders game, and what would his stats look like? Don't get into hypotheticals about someone else replacing those numbers. No other receivers on this team are remotely at their levels, particularly in that game.

BY has had Thielen for twice as many games as Dalton and kicking Diontae to the curb was a net positive. I'm not even sure what point you're trying to make here. Their supporting casts have been as close to identical as you can possible get, if anything I'd give a slight edge to BY in that regard but it's splitting hairs.

I gave him context and he ignored it.  It is what it is.

They are just picking and choosing random stuff to nitpick.

Alright Rock. If you say so. For the record, Dalton had 3 games with over 200 yards passing in his 5 game stint as the starter. Guess who his leading receiver was in each of those games? Guess...

This didn't age well....we shall see.

I mean if you want to split hairs, Bryce is:

1572 yards, 7 TD, 7 INT, 59% comp % on the season.

If you want to just talk about the last "few weeks". Bryce is:

1273 yards, , 7 TD, 4INT, 59%

Which means he is averaging

212 yards, 1.1 TD, 0.6INT per game.

Congrats, he went from Randy Fasani to Kyle Allen. He is doing better but he still isn't good. As long as he is progressing week to week, I'm happy for him, but keep in mind he has a long fuging way to go to be considered good.
