Chase Daniels breaks down Bryce vs DEN

He needs to start hitting the first read of the plays when they’re open

Competent QBs can read defenses presnap, see where their best matchups are and already know where they're going with the ball.

Then have good footwork with fast fundamentally sound dropbacks.

See the field well and decisive with their decisions on where to go with the ball.

And an NFL caliber arm, get the ball out quickly and deliver it with velocity.

Bryce can do none of these things.

This was a good breakdown from Daniels.  Last year has had a lasting impact on Young.

  • He still isn't getting the time needed from the OL - the OL we have is made to establish the run and for the run to be in play.  We get behind and have to throw all game we are doomed with this O-line.
  • His receivers have to catch the ball when he makes a good throw to them, he can't have them dropping his good passes.
  • Why are we running 4 slants all toward the same direction?  Why a triple option on 4th and 1? That's on the coaches.
  • Bryce gets hurried and starts slinging the ball where it shouldn't be thrown, more study and recognition from him are needed.
  • Bryce doesn't step up in the pocket and throws too soon and unbalanced.  He over and under throws the ball because of it.  That's on him.  If the pocket isn't there and he can't get his base set he needs to check down or "live to fight another day."

He has been thrown to the wolves and has lost his confidence.  This team doesn't have much, if any, talent and it's a cluster.  I think he can still be an NFL QB.  Maybe not a QB1 in the short term, but if he has a chance with better coaching and personnel he may be better than we are giving him credit for.

I think we ruined him last year and have not fixed anything to help him this year.  If we can't run or get way behind all NFL defenses are coming after him.  Dalton has more respect and defenses didn't always sell out to get to him because he'd hit a quick slant, screen, or check down because he has the experience to know what's coming and what to do.

Just my 2 cents.

I appreciate your in depth look at it but I think there is a lot of stuff you bring up that he brings on himself.  He drops too deep to try to see over the line which creates a lot more pressure on the line.  He also has no feel for the pocket and pretty regularly bails on a clean pocket or shifts in a direction that puts more pressure on the line.  #1 though no matter how many excuses we want to make for him,  he has to stand on his tiptoes to see over nfl lines which makes his throws entirely have to come from his arm and when you factor that's the only place his throwing power can come from with that issue,  he's never going to have an arm that's nfl capable.  It's as simple as that.

How do you explain Drew Brees then?

He didn't wear heels when he played.  Having talent around you and the confidence you can stay in the pocket and have time to throw the ball does wonders for a QB.  Young has never had that.

What you've said is true, he does bail and goes the wrong way at times but if you've been put on your butt as much as he has with terrible protection I dare say most of us would do the same.

I am not saying Young is a franchise QB, but I believe our Front Office, Coaching, and Tepper have basically ruined him for being worth anything to the Panthers.  A different team, FO, coaching staff and I think some crow might be eaten, whether that's people who don't think he's worth one cent or me!

The only thing preventing a 5 year rebuild is to play Bryce, Brooks, XL and Coker and pray to God something develops. Defense is going to consume the next few drafts. Brooks needs to be special for any of this to work.

Okay, please look up the actual size of Drew Brees. When you do you will realize, I hope, he is as close to the prototypical size as he is to Bryce. In the middle.

Comparing the two off of their size because Brees is as small as Bryce.... it is not a real thing.

Stand a 6'1" 205-210 lb guy next to Young and see what that really looks like.

Brees was slightly taller. Those few inches should make a huge difference. Brees is like 6'0 and I don't believe Bryce Young is actually 5'10. I think he is 5'9 at the very tallest. Brees was way stronger in his playing days. He worked out regularly and trained hard. Though not a huge guy, Brees had much more strength and power than Bryce. I don't even think Bryce truly works out. Brees had better throwing mechanics by far, .much stronger arm, much higher football IQ and is a hall of fame QB and one of the best to ever throw the football. Brees also had leadership qualities and could command an offense out on the field.  Brees had/had pretty much every single characteristic better than Bryce physically and mentally as well as a much better foot ball mind for the NFL.

I personally can't find much to compare Bryce to Drew Brees. I wish it were a different fact if reality but most quality NFL QB's can occasionally make some chicken salad out of chicken poo even if they are on a bad team but I have never seen Bryce once make any chicken salad and it has best of times just been sub marginal on a good day (take out that packers game last year) with nothing else to go by. Even with as bad as things have been with the team, he just doesn't seem mentally, physically or emotionally capable of making any chicken salad ever. Great college QB but what a god awful NFL quarterback

It’s not just the height. Bryce is literally petite. You’d be worried about bumping into him in the line at the grocery store.

https://x.com/formerlyfiz/status/1837934913175146959?s=46&t=JBd6ZXmGQ3LmWL-ineTnAA

and Bryce is not drew brees. That’s one player, stop referencing. Bryce is much closer to the countless productive college qbs who don’t have the skill set to succeed in the nfl. it’s just harder to make that comparison because you don’t remember those people because they’re forgettable.

Bryce is the exact same, except he had a marketing team behind him, he went to bama, and the panthers gave up a fortune for him and some people can’t accept that.

It doesn't matter how many times you trot him out there and do analysis and break downs of his play. Bryce is not an NFL QB. He has no arm strength and throws his balls with zero velocity. His screen passes are even floaters that dont reach the target on time. He also has zero athletic ability. Most smaller QBs are fast and shifty. He doesn't even have that quality. Props to Bryce and his family for knowing how to market him. He's been in the spotlight his entire football playing life. They fleeced the entire NFL. He will make his millions and be out of the league in 2-3 years. This guy is not even a backup. The faster we move on from him, the faster we can recover from this massive massive mistake. Hopefully he is moved this off-season.

150 million dollars spent on the OL in free agency and he feels bad for Bryce Young. Not the fans who were told by Bryce how he started his offseason watching Netflix and going shopping.

Then in the comments there's some maniac rambling about how Bryce actually had a good deep ball in college only to slink away when someone gives him the actual data compared to other Alabama QB's.

The disconnect on realistically evaluating him and the bizarre lengths some will go to form excuses is on another level.

I'm ready to see how he plays against the Saints at home. Good thing it's already Friday.

I've already got my bets in i moved the spread to Saints -9.5 Kamara TD and 100+ rushing and receiving easy money.

Here's where I am: Bryce Young looks and plays like a mid tier back up QB.

He does have talent, but so far, it's not working out.  Like many highly touted and drafted QBs, he's going to have a LONG shelf life.

Sunday, Bryce made some great plays.  Absolutely.  He also made some bone headed plays.  Bryce's greatest issue is that he hasn't figured out how to play fully in the NFL - where dudes are miles better than the SEC.

Now could better coaching help?  Yes.  But there is also an expectation for Bryce: his brain was his superpower.  He's got to show that on the field.  He needs to be able to play chess with DCs and MLBs.  He's just reacting and responding.  Bryce needs to be that field general, and he's not that guy (yet? maybe - I'm not a palm reader).

But a MUCH bigger issue is that he's not THE MAN.  Bryce is the nicest kid in the world, but you need some professional arrogance to play in the NFL.  You need to believe not just in your deity of choice, but also in yourself.  For everything, I don't think that Bryce truly has that self assured confidence to be a successful QB right now.

I'm fine with the Panthers playing Bryce the rest of the season.  Let him put out an audition tape that shows what he can be and can do.  Then in March, trade him to someone who swears they can fix him.  Let Dave and Dan get their guy - and see if they can develop him into a stud.  We'll have plenty of choices in the draft.

Now if Bryce goes through puberty (ok, that was mean, some of you will like that though) and grows up into a DUDE of a QB who can make the right calls, play bigger than his size, and lead us to a win or two while looking much more competent; what do we do?  That is the million dollar question.  If Bryce evolves into the DUDE - then let's get the best players to help him on Defense and build up the other areas of the team.  Just get talent.

If he still looks inconsistent and timid, well, hopefully he puts enough good plays up to make someone else interested.
