With the first pick, don't draft a QB? Draft a DE? C'mon!

If I thought like Tepper and felt the team is only a couple of players away from competing then that is probably what I would do. But this team is nowhere near being able to compete with anyone right now. They would be getting curb stomped even if they didn't have a single injury. This team will not break .500 for another 3 years. That's if Tepper doesn't fire everyone again and they magically hit on most of their draft picks. You cannot convince me otherwise.

I don't disagree but that doesn't mean we can't sign free agents. I mean, we literally have to do this. Everyone in the NFL does.

Again FA is not how you build a competitive team. That is for teams who already have talent. We don't have that right now.

At best you hit on 2 elite guys in FA. That's not turning this team around. We have to simply start drafting better. That's how you build your foundation. We have a decent Oline now and the WR room looks decent with the rookies. Now it's time to start adding some talent on defense. That's our biggest concern right now.

Hit on those draft picks and a few key FA guys and we can start talking about changing the culture.

if I was a GM, my best players need to be drafted and retained before they hit the final year of the contract.  You supplement your roster in FA with primarily role players and to build depth on the roster.  Maybe if you're knocking on the superbowl window you make a splash signing but we all know that may not come for years if all things go right.

Yup. Just not the expensive guys on day 1 unless you're a playoff team looking for that big missing piece. Looking for elite guys in free agency on a bottom team is a good way to stay at the bottom. Got to hit on those 6 to 10 million guys more as contributors around the draft picks to build up the team first. IMO that did terrible with that this year.

Unless your whole front office (the football guys, Not Tepper)  are convinced a certain QB is the top prospect and a Franchise guy that can carry your team.
Then trade down.  There are only 2 QBs really looked at as top 10-15 worthy QBs in this draft, and there are multiple other QB hungry teams like Jets, Giants, Browns, Raiders, Titans, etc fighting for 1.

We have about as many holes as an expansion team.  And 1-2 guys isn’t going to move the needle.  Luckily for us, this seems to be a strong Defensive class.  Add another top 50 pick in a trade down for another body.

I hate to break it to you, but at best - we're two years away from being competitive. Just take as much quality defensive talent and then worry about the long-term QB. If that means trading down to take DL, DE, or LBs - then we absolutely need to do it.

Agree. We are not a QB away. I suspect we are picking top 5 in 2026 no matter what we do.

Cheap 1 yr contracts sure. They have to field a complete roster of course. What I'm saying is they should not be handing out any contracts over 2 years to anyone until they draft their core players. So far i would argue they do not have na single one. Until that happens I do not have any faith that this team will ever be more than the worst team in the league.

Nobody is questioning Tmac the talent. There is no doubt he's the best WR prospect.

The problem is I have seen you say we should take him even at the #1 pick. That just doesn't make sense in my mind. You don't take a WR #1 overall. The last WR to be drafted #1 overall was Keyshawn Johnson in 1996. Under no circumstance do you take Tmac #1.

If you want Tmac just trade back a couple of spots so you can still get him while also getting extra picks. I have no problem with us drafting Tmac but it has to be the right spot.

Aren’t you the same person who has been advocating to take Hunter at #1 overall?

Someone who is more than likely going to be a CB in the NFL, a position that I don’t think has ever had someone go #1, because they never should be taken #1

I think over the next 10 years or so, there will be a bunch of WRs who go #1 overall with the way the game is shifting to being which a passing league.  Unless you have a Mahomes, which nobody else does, it’s near impossible to contend these days without a true elite WR

Really, QB, DE, and OT are the only positions to get drafted #1 overall over the last 20 years or so.  Just not sure there is someone at those positions worthy of us taking first overall if we have the pick, and if we can’t trade back and have to make the selection there, I think a true elite WR is exactly what we need to take, it’s been our biggest hole for a long time.

It's been a passing league for a decade now and still no WR has gone #1.

QB/DE are the main positions that are worthy of the highest pick. Every once and a while a LT will get lucky and go #1.

And no I never said take Hunter #1. I said anything outside of #1 is fair game just like I said for Tmac.

We would be fools to take either Tmac or Hunter #1 overall. Use that #1 pick as leverage trade back and still get either Hunter or Tmac.

was curious so I looked.  NFL history.  6 corners draft in the top 5 in NFL history.  Never one drafted in the top 3.

WRs have been taken #1 before.  And #2.  And #3.

I think the decline in WRs being taken so high.....is the passing rules in today's NFL makes playing the position easier.  So there are a lot of WRs that are going to be successful today vs years ago.

1996 was the last time a WR went #1.

I'm fine taking Tmac at #2. My only thing is don't take any position other than QB if we are staying at #1. If we want Tmac or Hunter just trade back a few spots. There are only 2 QBs who teams will be fighting over and that's Sanders and Ward. If they want a QB more than us then they will have to give us a good deal.

    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
