With the first pick, don't draft a QB? Draft a DE? C'mon!

From the little I have watched allar, he reminds me of the old school nfl big strong pocket passer.  From the full half from last saturday I really liked what I saw.  Certainly not top 5 pick but def lower into the draft he would be worthy.  He feels like  a dude canales would like, big strong and throws downfield with velocity and accuracy

I like Allar just not at the top of the 1st. I would be interested in the 2nd round if we don't go qb.

What if a player like Allar declares (I don’t think he will).
Yeah I like how Ward gets better every year and went from a small school QB to one of the top QBs in D1. You know he has to have crazy work ethic. If he is a mid-tier starter in the NFL you can definitely build around him. Goff for example is a mid guy but the Lions have built him a squad and he looks great now. Ward has also carried that Miami team to several wins with is promising.

The Lions were already building and traded for Goff.  I kinda get where you are going, but apples and oranges scenarios.  We suck, no need to mince words. Ward would be a rookie, we wouldn't be getting him a couple of years into his career after development.

I like Ward, but I need to see him play in a bowl game. I knew Stroud was going to be that dude after the game he had against Georgia. Many of us did. I still remember that night of the game. There was many on here on the Stroud-wagon after that game.

I also like how he has gotten better each year, and I like he’s been in college a little while. With that being said, I’m cool with going defense if there’s a guy there worth taking at 1.

Allar or ewers in the 2nd would be fine with me

Ewers in last year's draft would have been QB7 and a second rounder.  With a few teams definitively in the QB market and as small of a pool as the top-tier QB talent is this coming draft, there's no way he falls to the second round.  Not unless the wheels come completely off or he's injured.  He's absolutely going to be QB2 or QB3 and a first rounder.  That said, I only project 3 QBs going in round one right now depending on which juniors declare.

Don't get suckered into highlight videos with wide open WRs.  Young was hitting open targets at Bama too. I think I saw one tight window throw for a TD and that was inside the 10 yard line...so short.

Ward is hands down the best QB in this class.  That said, he's not close to a generational QB.

I get what you are saying, again I was on the trade back team but...if you look at his body of work throughout his collegiate career you will find a true example of hard work, dedication and development!  For those that don't know, he wasn't handed the keys to the kingdom from his dad everywhere he went like some that get talked about on here:

1.  University of the Incarnate Word (No kidding) his only scholarship offer

     a.  Balled out, won the Jerry Rice Award

2.  Washington State

     a.  Balled out, was going to declare for the draft but knew he could develop more

3.  Miami

     a.  Balling out, probably leader for Heisman as of now

All that to say, this kids has already show grit, determination and a willingness to do what it takes to succeed.  Much like our favorite, for now, Cam, the kid just wins!  He is 31-19 as a starter with 16,093 passing yards, 139 TD to 35 Int and 19 rushing TD's.

To have the self-reflection to know "I've got to get better" and to do it...should tell us all, he is just different.

He may not be generational "right now" but the way he is developing he could be.  Oh, and he is 6'2 223 lbs.

I'm not sold on him either. On top of that his dad is toxic and I do not want him anywhere near Tepper. If you think it's a circus now you haven't seen anything until you have Dion in Teppers ear influencing his decisions.

I’d pie you twice for this comment.  The worst possible combination:  Prime and Tepper.

Yeah I’m just saying mid-tier starters can become quite good with some help. You keep trying to find that upper tier elite guy and it may never happen. If we think Ward can become a good NFL starter at the most important position, one we can’t see to get right, we should take him. I know Goff’s situation was different, just showing how a mid guy can appear top tier.

How about sign Jameis Winston in the off-season? Is he a free agent this year? Have him and another vet and wait another year to draft a QB while taking the BPA in draft this year?

This is where I'm at. I don't want to reach for a qb in a weak QB draft.  See how that worked out for Pittsburgh in the Pickett draft

I'm telling you that any qb taken 1st overall will be over drafted. So far this entire class is underwhelming.

Besides T-Mac, and I'm not sure we need more WR's, who wouldn't be over drafted at number 1?  I don't see anyone that stands out as "Absolutely must take this player" unless you are in dire need of a WR.  So, with that, someone has to be taken 1st and if we get that opportunity, then we may as well take the BPA at a position of need...QB!

I would feel better if the Panthers ended up in the 2nd or 3rd slot myself. But Tepper is going to Tepper this thing so it doesn't really matter what I think. I'm just an observer.

    • I didn't say much bigger. Watch the highlights I linked. Bryce doesn't have the arm strength and/or talent to make the vast majority of the throws Mac made in that video.
    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
