Dan Graziano: Panthers will trade Diontae Johnson

Sign him long-term.

We get a good player and just trade him away to a contender. What are those picks getting us?

This mindset results in paying  Robbie Chosen Doug Frank Anderson….when you shouldn’t.

there is a reason Johnson is here to begin with.  He is a #2 that leaves a lot to be desired.  Think he already is starting to let it show.  I don’t think he plays very hard.

And with his” I can’t play everyone position and make all the plays ” response the other week….thats not the type dude needed.  We need leadership from the non youth guys we carry.  That ain’t him.

I think that comment is way over blown by the fan base. Some players need to play a lot better, or be out of the league. It’s tough talk, but they need to play better. Johnson is one of the few bright spots we have on offense.

I’d try not to over pay, but not give him more than 3 year contract.

I think it would be overblown if it was Theilen.  But Johnson found himself in Carolina for a reason.  So everyone is judged differently

I want to know what vet WR is going to show great leadership after getting blown out 40-7 while watching guys miss multiple assignments.

Damn near the entire team is in shambles and WR is not the position to be looking for to receive great leadership.

Thielen has been nothing but a dick with his comments since coming to Carolina.

He seems bitter that Carolina is the only squad he can still get starts on.

Nobody is even expecting "great leadership" here. We haven't sniffed the playoffs in going on 7 years now. But if someone is wanting a top end contract it is never going to be a good look on any team in any circumstances to throw your teammates under the bus while you're giving low effort and quitting on routes.

Idk if it's that some of our fans are just desperate to cling to anything that resembles decent receiver play or what but character matters too. People gave DJ Moore a lot of poo that honestly he didn't deserve but I never heard him act like a bitch about his teammates to the media like that. Truth is truth.

He's washed at best. Needs to be traded for anything we can get or cut.

It's the right move if we're not gonna re-sign him but unless he's an absolute locker room cancer we should be re-signing him.

He turns 29 this offseason, he has 2-3 years left in him and he's never really been an elite WR outside of the few times a season he flashes the potential.

At some point you hav to accept what he is, someone with talent who isn't a #1 on a contending team and is probably a 3rd receiving option on that type of team.

There's no reason to give him the $20+ million a year it would take for us to re-sign him with where we are at as a franchise.  As I've said a million times, draft T-Mac with our First round pick instead, get a better WR on a rookie contract and 8 years younger with the potential to be a Top 5 WR in the league.

So if we're not going to re-sign him (like we shouldn't), then there really is no reason to not trade him for whatever we can get as there are some WR needy teams who think they can still contend this year.  I'd also trade Thielen for the same reason, think we could actually get more from the right team for him as him in the slot could be more helpful to teams than Johnson on the outside.

if you are going to overpay vet types to have them be in Carolina (which is what you would be doing with Johnson).....then they absolutely need them to be top tier character/leadership types.  It's pretty simple.

makes no sense to sign Johnson on any level.  This team needs to built something from the ground up.  You don't need to pay misfit types.  And that's why he is here to begin with.  Use one as a body for a year? Sure.  Which is what we are presently doing.

He did this in Pitt too. They traded him off while needing another WR. Not to mention no one else on our roster is acting like DJ. Get frustrated on the field and yeah I get it, it’s an emotional game. Complain to the press during an interview and giving up on routes (he is part of the problem he is crying about) are just dumb IMO. Not something you want during a hopeful “culture change.”
