I think D. Brown is good but not great. 8 sacks in 4 seasons is pretty lackluster in a passing league. In his defense, I do think he would be better if he had better players around him. That said, I don't think he'd ever be the best player on a GREAT DEFENSE.

Derrick Brown is a defensive tackle, not a pass-rushing edge. He's not supposed to be a 10 sack-per-year player.

I have to be a good bit older than you. I grew up in a time where I saw great DT's get 10+ sacks per year. I saw all of the following guys menace QBs from the interior line: Mean Joe Green, Randy White, John Randle, Warren Sapp, Cortez Kennedy, Jerome Brown. These guys would would get near or surpass the 10 sack mark consistently year in and year out.

Before them you had guys like Rosey Grier, Bob Lily, Merlin Olsen, and Alan Page...who once won NFL Player of the Year...as a freaking DT tackle!

In recent season we've seen guys like Aaron Donald and Fletcher Cox bring terror with their interior pressure.

Derrick Brown just signed a 4 year/96 million extension. That's $24 mil per year. He may not get 10 sacks a season. But, is it  unreasonable to expect 4 or 5 a year? That's a sack every 3 games. DB may make a lot of tackles in the run game, but this is a PASSING LEAGUE. He set a tackling mark for DTs, but only twice did he tackle a QB in a live game behind the like of scrimmage. He's a good player, but he's being paid like a  great/extraordinary player.

I personally believe he'd fair better in a 4-3 defense with stud DE on the edge and a complementary player beside him in the trenches.

Keep developing this draft class (XL, Coker, JT, Brooks, Wallace should get plenty of snaps as starters).  Build around DB on defense, make a decision on Horn.  Hunt, Icky, and Lewis are good for the next couple years.  Sell off anyone else that can get you decent value and keep drafting.

Watching the Luke interview, it was striking how much not only he, but his teammates as well, loved the game of football. They lived and breathed it. Greg, TD, Luke, Cam, etc. Luke talked about how instrumental it was in his development.

Besides Horn and maybe Brown, I’m not sure we have anyone that truly lives and breathes this game. That’s a big, big problem.

Not only do we lack talent, the cupboard is completely devoid of vet players who straight up love football. We’ve got dudes that play like it’s just a job, and they get paid regardless.

I’m not really sure how to fix this. We have to have at least 2 INCREDIBLE drafts where we luck in to a few gamebreakers. As it is right now, any vet we bring in to this ish hole on a big $ contract is sure to get stale and check out.

You mean the strategy of trading players for draft picks and then having an immediate need at the position you just traded isn't a winning strategy?

We’ve got no winning strategy. Had we traded Burns and Moore when we got great offers, we’d have been in great shape if we just took the guys taken at those picks and in one case drafted the top WR available to replace Moore. It can absolutely be a winning strategy. If you sell off the same guys a year later for spare change and use it to trade up for a shitty QB, it doesn’t work. Our GM fuged us. It’s that simple. Had nothing to do with one way being better than another.

Not part of our future or present even, just getting paid

Is there any other team that’s signed so many hurt guys or guys coming off serious surgeries? We seem to throw out big money for guys like Paradis, Okung and Wonnum and get little to no return. It’s like we’re surprised when it doesn’t work out.

We have to find some players worthy of being part of the core first. I like our OL for the most part. We have some young guys who may become part of the core. Brown is a beast. But honestly, how many "core players" do we truly have? A small handful at most. We largely have NFL backups and borderline roster caliber types.

The real question is how long will we have to wait to get them?

I said it at the time and stand by it still, if Bryce was a bust (which I figured about an 80% chance of being one), we are looking at a minimum of 4, probably 5 years of having a 0% chance of even sniffing a playoff spot. So we are on year 2, so really at least 3 more years before it's time to start to talk about playoffs again. In other words, I wouldn't worry about making the playoffs until the Fall of 2028.

This is what people warn about when you get idiots like Tepper throwing out these insane trades because he just wants the first pick so badly. All these people cheer because they are excited at the time for that pick, but when reality hits them in the face with "don't even think about playoffs until 2028" you'll see them start crying. But that's the reality when you have an idiot like Tepper as owner. And the even harsher reality is if Tepper is still involved in 2028, there is 0% chance of a playoff spot no matter who our roster has. The Panthers are guaranteed not to play in a single playoff game if he is involved. I said this 3 years ago and ill stand by that 3 years from now. People will have to face reality.
